Happy “You’ve Got Cancer” day - Another milestone about to be passed.

My story is no different than most survivors. The appointment was on Friday, April 16, 2010 at 16:45. I should have clued in. My doctor’s gaze was focused on the report he was holding. “It’s not good. I can’t sugar-coat this. You’ve got cancer and it’s pretty bad.”, he said. The room went dark for me, as I felt myself falling through space. My mind raced as I listed all the things to ensure my family’s well-being after I was gone. I had the highest Gleason score, which meant a really low survival rate. When I finally caught my breathe, I asked him about the top doctors if he were me. He named 5 in total, two of whom he regarded very highly. I chose radiation oncology over surgery and got 11 more years than I ever expected, so far. This was my Linear Accelerator (Linac) for radiation.

Father’s Day 2012, I was officially done with chemical treatment. At the family lunch, Bonnie gave me a gift – a tour guide of Italy. “We’re going to Italy as a family” to celebrate my 60th birthday. And so began our love for Italy. The trip was the best ever, despite the ravages the chems had done to me.

Lesson learned: Every day is a gift, called the “present”. Open it with wonder.
    Peace out - JP

Thank you for your inspiring story. My wife had lung cancer, then almost died from complications after her operation, in 2013. We continue to treasure life, and our quality of life is good. Keep going @SoulSurfer :thumb::thumb::thumb:

Cool to have you (and others) still with us. Everyone's journey is different and I'm glad you're still on yours. I believe in the mission of the caring pros who've treated you.

It's personal, for me. My professional gig was as a Project Manager in IT for healthcare and I helped plan, then my teams deployed all IT in new hospitals. My late wife got all of her lung cancer treatment in a cancer care hospital that my team equipped. My final, pre-retirement gig was PMing at another cancer and research hospital. Among a hundred other things, my team prepped computers for programming LINAC treatments.

Keep on keeping on @SoulSurfer @REWTX and all others!

Congratulations to all who have survived cancer or other serious illnesses

It's just a shame that it sometimes takes us being faced with death to appreciate life.

YES!!! Glad you’re well, every day is a gift! My family was touched by cancer for the first time when my Dad was diagnosed with leukemia about 12 years ago. He fought a long and difficult battle that lasted about 10 years before he succumbed to that dreadful disease. He was incredibly brave. Celebrate your milestone and your life every day!

Stage 3 lung cancer diagnosed in 2019. Went through chemo and radiation. Looks like the tumors have stabilized, and my Oncologist has declared me in remission. Thank the Goddess for every moment of every day! Of course, quitting smoking helped.

But I love the stories of people that kicked it's azz.
Mom bought 7-8 extra years through operations & radiation but it beat her in the end

My son currently has AML leukemia. He is getting ready for his stem cell transplant in a couple weeks. He is a fighter, right now his blast is .01% after 3 rounds of chemo. Its not easy on anyone but I am so proud of him. I cannot wait until they tell him he has won. I hope all goes well for you and your family.

I just passed the 9 year mark since my surgery for colon cancer in 2012.

It’s good to hear that so many people beat the disease these days.
