Yes. Thank you to all who served and who have sacrificed. Many of my relatives growing up had fortunately come home from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and had stories to tell. Only one that I know about who was in the Royal Airforce and shot down by the Luftwaffe.
Same here, but the other way round. A great uncle of mine was shot down by American anti aircraft gun when he was drafted in early 1945, at the ripe age of 21 years. It’s always important to remember that those were people, not numbers, who died. Lest we forget!

My wife and I just returned from Hawaii. Visiting Pearl Harbor was a top priority for us to pay our respect. Bucket list item scratched off.

It was for me too when we went on 2016. Is the Arizona still crying the black tears of the Arizona? I know when we visited they were discussing having it capped off.
Another visit that was a must for us was to visit Normandy Beach when we were in France in 2019. Both places are so very sobering.

We didn't notice any discoloration in the water, I don't know if they capped it off or not.

Yes, very sobering experiences to say the least.

I get concerned that people think it's happy hot dog and burger day, but like you said @Nate D , one of the blessings of liberty paid for by the few is the pursuit of happiness.
All are created equal and have the right, paid for by the blood of patriots, to pursue happiness.

"If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace; and this single reflection, well applied, is sufficient to awaken every man to duty.”

One way that I pursue happiness is through counter-narrative. Every way of looking at something is also a way of not looking at something. Like, for example, happiness originally was property. Which has clearly been revised since universal male suffrage was introduced as a result of industrialization in the 1830s. And my fear is that we get so caught up in the religiosity of the hero worship that we fail to question why they were, are, and continue to be thrown into harm’s way.

In 1798, a newspaperman was imprisoned for accusing John Adams of raising an army in times of peace.

Being at Arlington overwhelms me to the point of paralysis.
