I'm a newbie to this forum and whilst I have good engineering/diy skills, I’m lacking the technical knowledge of the workings of the legendary Strat! So, I’ll do my best to search the forum for answers to questions I have but please forgive me if I end up repeating something that has been discussed to death in the past.

I’ve been playing (ok perhaps owning) guitars for almost forty years and have recently decided to try my skills at rebuilding/customising budget electric guitars not for profit but just as an interesting hobby (my previous hobby of rebuilding 1970’s Japanese motorcycles certainly didn’t produce a profit).

Apart from a small collection of Squier and Mex built Strats waiting for rebuild, I have have a rather beaten up 1999 American Standard in metallic purple (#793) which I believe is relatively rare.

Thanks for allowing me on board and for reading my drivelling intro!

    Welcome!!!

We shall need to see some photos of your guitars. It’s a rite of passage.

    Welcome to the forum.

I've lost my "Mansonienne says" image in a computer "upgrade" so all I can do is say resistance is futile, upload your pictures.

    Guitars and/or 70s Japanese bikes, I'm not fussy :p

Welcome to Strat Talk. As a long time guitar player and motorcycle rider and mechanic, we have a lot in common. (Bought fixed and resold numerous Japanese bikes.... have collected Harleys in recent years)

Welcome in Chris, would love to see pics for your guitar and motorcycles. Everybody enjoys a good hobby but personally I don't like to make it profitable simply because it turns it into a job and that is the last thing I want....:thumb:

Welcome to S-T! Also did the 70's Japanese bikes things for a good bit, with similar results. Glad you've joined us here!

My latest acquisition. A ‘99 American Standard in Purple Metallic (#793). Not that old but not looked after very well. Lots of scratches and dings but I’d say mostly from poor handling & storage not from years of being “on the road”. And to add insult to injury, the maple neck lacquer had blown (was almost opaque). So, I decided on a complete rebuild. Couldn’t find paint code anywhere so got the body colour matched with an automotive industry colorimeter and resprayed. Stripped and cleaned the pots (quite easy actually), fully rewired, all plastic replaced with genuine Fender black parts (was white), Wilkinson pups fitted. Still got the neck to finish which could be the bigger of the two jobs. So far it’s partially stripped and the frets removed. I’ll update when she’s done. Any opinions as to wether I’ve devalued her by respraying? Not that it matters as she’s a keeper.

On a '99, not by much, if any IMHO. 30 years down the line, maybe. Just grin and play it, what's done is done and it looks and probably plays great!
