Ok, this is good. I'm seeing good stuff on these and the dsl40, and I'm leaning heavily toward the dsl40cr (it has master volume control).

I also see some jcm200 dsl50. This is a lot of letters and numbers. How's the dsl20 or 40 compare to the jcm2000 dsl50 or jcm2000 dsl401, beside the obvious wattage difference?

I have the earlier 40 Watt version ( DSL40C ) which I run at 20 Watt ( triode mode ). It gets loud.
    4 modes, clean or crunch on channel 1, OD-1 or OD-2 on channel 2 - w/foot switchable channels 1 to 2.
Very good cleans, great crunch on channel 1,
and who needs an OD or Distortion pedal on either channel 2? Not me.

The newer model DSL40CR is supposed to be measurably better.

The JCM 2000 version of the DsL (dual super lead) is an awesome amp. I used the 50 watt head version and a 4x12 cab for years. Monster amp.

I have no experience with the modern DsL amps they make now.

I can tell you from experience, the 800, 900, and 2000 Marshalls were very well built and roadworthy.
Chassis mounted pots, jacks, tubes, big fat power supply caps, and big transformers.

Edit: the DsL 401 was a 40watt(?) Combo that used el84 tubes.
The larger amps used eL34 tubes. To my ears, there's a noticeable difference in tone.

The DSL 40s use EL34 power tubes.

    Dude, thanks.

    This all sounds very promising.

The Peavy 6505 has entered as a wildcard contender, but there's a handful of these 1990s jcm2000 amps around at what seems to be good prices, I'd feel pretty lucky to get one.

I really like my Origin 50 watt head. The 50 will being more OD to the table than the 20. Sounds very vintage

    depends on what you’re after.

That is true, but the dsL 401 does not.
    It uses el84 tubes.

    The dsL40xx = eL34
    The jcm 2000 dsL 401 = eL84

I want to say that the DSL40CR and the DSL100HR can now switch between all 4 modes with the JVM switch. I'm on the fence of retiring my DSL100H for the DSL100HR.

Try the Delta King 10 and 12.

Also check out the DSL40CR, it has a attenuater so you can toggle between 4o watts and 20 watts. Great amp for clean and of course that Marshall crunch.

Can't comment on the 401 but the DSL 50 head is my favorite hands down. A tad loud for home use but what the heck.

Got all of the above btw so this isn't just a 'I read on the internet' answer.
