I have a 97 Affinity Squier that's currently dakota red. I want to refinish it in Torino Red, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding a color code for a paint shop to reproduce the color. I do have the hex (BF0010) and of course lots of pics, but unlike other colors from the 50s and 60s that have a readily available Duco paint color code, I can't find anything on Torino Red. I have the hex, rgb, pantone etc but the paint store can't match the color without a PPG or vehicle paint code. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

    Thank You

I would think Dakota Red and Torino Red are hardly different enough to even warrant wanting to change from one to the other.....

they’re very different to my eyes. Dakota red is much darker and duller. Torino red is lighter and bright closer to hot rod red. Dakota is like the back (maybe even a bit darker) and torino is more like the middle.

To both of you: you need a mint pickguard and parchment covers for the win!

Here is an update for anyone reading this. It turns out the color Torino Red was first done by Fender on Eric Clapton's strat which he wanted in the same color as his Ferrari. The color's name is Rossa Corsa. The hex is D20000 and the PPG is 75250. It is the same exact color Ford color Bright Red which has the same hex with a PPG of 2296.

It took some research to figure out, but I'm going to refinish my guitar in that color and hopefully post pics to this thread when I'm done.

The Fender/Squier color codes are from automotive paint color codes ? Torino was a Ford (Starsky & Hutch), Dakota is Chrysler Dodge ?

Gran Torin red is a mixture of orange and red... a unique color code not the same as Torino Red.
The Dakota was a Dodge truck.... pretty sure the color pre-dates the mid-80s truck.
In fact, I just found this... Dakota Red was introduced in 1958 for Cadillac and was quickly adopted into the Fender line of colors.

    Correlation, not causation.

Decent paint places, like your local automotive paint supplier, have a device that will look at the color and find the closest match in their system of colors. They set it on the color sample, it reads it, and gives a mixture to get that color as well as a code if it's a match to a known color.

If I understand this correctly, the Torino Red Fender was first introduced as a custom color by Eric Clapton who requested his signature guitar be the same color as his Ferrari. Fender wasn’t going to name the color Ferrari red or Rossa Corsa or they would be sued. Instead, they obfuscated the color by naming it Torino red. The color “Bright Red” used by Ford during the 70s and 80s is the same exact color as Rossa Corsa. Both can be identified by their hex, D20000.

In case someone in the future is reading this and confused, I think it’s important to distinguish the fact that Fender colors aren’t named to identify the colors they were influenced by. It’s quite the opposite. They wouldn’t want to litigate the rights to identify the color that way so they just used the term “Torino red” which is much more vague so a legal team would have a much harder time proving requiring a trial, discovery and testimony from paint color experts as opposed to just pointing out the fact that the color is clearly a copy.

I've recently found this wonderful article dealing with classic Fender colours, where they come from and some of the myths surrounding them, as well as finishing techniques used and things like the Fullerplast.

Of course. I had my Strat painted to match the St. James Red on my 2021 Bentley. Everyone's doing it.

that’s really cool. I think the Torino Red was first introduced around 1988 so that article probably doesn’t cover it, but thank you for sharing. Now I have something interesting to read on my train ride home today
