Our home rebuild is under way and Ive got a 600 square foot man cave with exterior access without central HVAC in the works.

Whats the best and safest way to heat it barring a mini split?

Im thinking space heaters run on propane but, some are safe and some will kill you.

You asked how I do it, then you asked the best and safest way. :) I use a wood stove to heat my whole place. I love heating with wood.

When I need heat in my basement workshop I just use a space heater. Both of the heaters I own have kill switches so that if they get tipped over it shuts off which keeps them safe too.

Do you need constant heating or on demand?

I'd say either electrical floor heating like you would put in a bathroom or a pellet burner. Alternatively, portable oil filled radiators.

Line the block walls with 1” foam insulation panels once you get your heat source.

House is on a slope. We had a crawlspace tall enough to walk in before.

I have well under a thousand dollars in my wood stove and chimney, but I did the work myself and bought a used Vermont Castings stove in good condition.

If you don't have room in the budget to connect the basement to the whole house system, mini-split or a boiler for in-floor heating...a wifi enabled oil illed heater might be the ticket. You can turn the unit on from anywhere so the basement can get warm before you need it. I have no idea how severe winters are in your area, but being at least partially under grade and having a sizable thermal mas in the walls I'd use sprayed in closed cell foam and rock wool insulation in the walls.

Do you have the funds to use a heat exchanger on the wood stove to heat water for a radiant system in the floor? If so, check out a product called Warm Wood...

When I was younger, I rented a basement suite apartment that had in-floor heating. The owner told me to never touch the thermostat because it was set to keep the house at the same temp year round. I was skeptical, but it was absolutely true. The house was always the same comfortable temperature no matter what the weather outside was like, and I never had to worry about cold feet on the hardwood and tile floors. If I were doing on reno on our current basement, I'd do anything I could fit in-floor heating into the budget.

Fill it with tube amps, or use the water under the floor idea.
