Okay, so this may’ve been covered before (if so, my apologies in advance), but I don’t feel like I have a lot of guitars, and I always wondered how many is too many, or if that’s even possible? I can’t help but think that if I found “the one”, I’d sort of stop playing all of the others, but I’m constantly switching between the guitars that I have depending on what genres/styles/songs I’m playing at the time, etc., and Truthfully, I’m not sure that I could ever just get down to one. I always appreciate the forum’s collective input so I was just wondering what everyone thought. Does anyone here have “the one”, and if so, do you have others too? Does anyone here have what they consider too many guitars? Inquiring minds want to know - thanks in advance!

I know we’ll have some people say “you can never have too many,”
but if you have more than what you’ll play in a few months, you probably have too many.

I have too many. It is nice to go back and re-discover some of them, after awhile. But mostly they just take up space.

I should just keep a few nice examples of each model, and move on.

I’d say if you don’t play it at all over a two year span, it’s excess.

Hmmmm I think if you have more guitars than days in 1 week, I think that is too much. Personally, I think 3 should be the max and I think those 3 should give you roughly different sounds/experiences. Like maybe SSS, HH, and SS would be enough. But I know ppl that have only strats in every combo possible. But at the end of the day, if you have a good enough reason for yourself to own them, then go for it. But for me, I think 3 is more than enough.

Two more than I have now. :D

But I can see by the previous posts that I may already have "over indulged". :p LOL

I think any guitar that you buy used at a price point that you can easily flip doesn't count against your total. If you buy 10 of them that way, what's the problem? But if you buy even one that the money is or might reasonably be needed elsewhere, then you have one too many.

I don't know. I'm currently at 3 right now. And I think that I don't need that many. I could downsize to 2 since I currently have 2 strats one in HSS and the other SSS. And I literally posted a NGD post earlier today. So I definitely don't have restraint lol

I have "the one" and "the two" and "the three" and "the........but the one I have been playing the most lately is my very 1st electric guitar and my wife bought it new back in '89 along with a Deluxe amp for an anniversary present; a white Fender MIK Stratocaster with a neck to die for.
I bought a new project guitar a couple of months ago for cheap but it's not working out so well so maybe #19 is around the corner especially if it's in Daphne Blue.:thumb::whistling:

    I have 8.

I rotate through them all on a pretty regular basis, three of them get less playing time than the other 5. Of those 5, sometimes I will play them all in one day.

For me the biggest problem with multiple guitars is I can't make up my mind which one I want to play. A terrible problem to have.:D

Ive got a whole lot,but there are people here who have one guitar that’s worth more than all of mine combined.. and then another $15,000 or so.

that counts for something, I guess.

"Ok, just step back for a moment and consider this:

Considering the fact that human need is infinite (cant say infinite in the case of an individual, just his lifespan), and need vrs limited resources is the foundation of the economical dilema...

There has not been a subject testing, supported with statistical data between Number of guitars vrs. Level of happiness, and its correlation.

But as soon as you get a new guitar, you get inspired.

As soon as you get a new guitar, you feel some certain bliss.

There is only empirical data to support that. Answer this to yourself, as soon as someone you know tells you they got a new guitar, you feel happy for them.

As long as you as you are constantly playing, out of debt, youre entitled to get every piece of gear you feel will make your playing a more satisfying experience."

This is my excuse with my GF.

    I own 9 =)

All great responses - thank you all!! I have less than 10, and that’s made up of a few different brands, pickup configurations, etc., and while I don’t nearly have enough time to play them all in one day, I’m constantly rotating, so I feel like I don’t have too many - yet... Or at least that’s what I keep telling myself - ha! ;)
