I’d probably go with a ‘70’s Strat. One that I could afford. I recently found a ‘79 natural ash Strat that as really nice but I held off. Maybe next year,

The one you buy before you die and don't get to play would be one too many, all of them before, are not.

How many guitars is too many? There are a number of numbers that correctly answer that question. And that number is exactly equal to the number of people who own guitars. I haven’t yet figured out exactly where I fit on that scale, but it seems to be somewhere south of one hundred. Twenty years or so ago, I was getting close enough to that milestone that it was a reasonable near term goal, and it’s such a nice round number. But that’s a lot of instruments, insurance, climate-controlled storage, and maintenance were getting in the way of play time. So I did some major herd thinning. But I still buy guitars once in while, so I’ll have to get back to you when I finally figure out the exact number that’s right for me. Definitely at least one more. Or maybe two. Or three...

I know I’m not going to worry about it until I feel I have, “to many”.

    .

When the guitars you have become a burden.

Too much work to store and protect against damage.
    Too much work to clean.
    Too much work for repairs.
Too many to think about the selling, boxing, and shipping time.

That could be ten guitars or a hundred guitars depending on the player.

    My ideal goal would be:

-Tele SS with a 4-way switch for series humbucker tones (backup for an HH guitar and some Strat backup)
-Strat SSS with an Armstrong Blender to dial up to Super Strat HSH (backup for HH guitar and some Tele backup)
-LP HH with coil splits (backup for SS guitars).
-Jazzmaster with series option for something different.
-Acoustic low enough price to play around the fire pit and at the beach without worries.

When the guitars begin to run you out of the house! Had the same problem with old guitar magazines. At some point you will know when.

My wife told me the other day that 10 guitars in the living room was too much, and one needs to go out before another goes in. Obviously, she must be talking about the living room... :whistling:

I own 11 string instruments and have no plans to get rid of any.

2 strats, different pickups, sounds & look
    1 tele
1 super strat' w/ Floyd Rose
1 flat top, double cut LP type
1 vintage semi hollow guitar (heirloom)
    1 steel string 6
    1 nylon string
    1 P/J bass
    1 mandolin (heirloom)
    1 dulcimer (heirloom)

Between the different sounds & style, tuning variety, history of the instrument, yada yada yada.... I actually could use just a couple more.

They are different colors of paint.

I guess you have too many if you are not using some of them.

Someone had made a comment in another post about the same question. And I think they are right if owning a whole bunch of guitars and amps doesnt effect you financially and you are still able to feed your self or your family and the way I look at it why not. I myself own 15 electrics and 3 acoustics and easily 18 amps and rediculas amount of effects. I dont have any other hobbies that cost a lot of money. I to wondered if I had to many guitars and finally realized I so enjoy playing and collecting so why the heck not.

I think I have 24 includng my Bass. I would have to count them all out again. I do use them all but for specific applications.
My answer to the title question, however, is; even my wife figured it out earlier in our marriage. Then she bought me this shirt to let me know that she is fine enabling me a little.

I think it is different for each person. Its too many when you have too many and feel they are inconveniencing you, taking up too much space, time or just never get played.

Especially if they never get played and you don't even like the look of them hanging on the wall as an ornament.
