Well I'm going to be shallow here and admit it. There are colors I won't buy. Yellow, most greens, shell pink, Carolina or Dakota Red. And polka dots, neon colors are out too

I'm sure someone will come along shortly and proclaim to have scientific proof that color affects tone.

color does not matter to me. I have preferences, but would never choose a guitar based on color, more interested in feel and sound

To some, The color comes first. Wrong color is a dealbreaker for many. Some people might play a guitar and it feels 100% right.. Correct neck shape, perfect weight, great pups..
But the color is not right..
"Naah.. i gotta pass on this one.. Not my color man.."
But that is justified if you are on stage. The guitar is just as much of a part that makes up your exterior image than anything.
Personally i am not a fan of Fiesta Red and other cheap pastel color. But i love Candy Apple Red...

    Alright guys.

I’ve done hundreds of tests over months and months and talked to my luthier (He’s been building guitars for 6 months) And we’ve concluded that a BLACK nitro finish under 2mm is scientifically the best. This is because black absorbs the color and heat around it, directly translating into tone. Also, the nitro finish allows the guitar to breathe, and the tone vibrates though your body.

Years ago, I just used to buy 'whatever' colour, and never gave it much thought – whatever was cheapest, that's how I rolled. Then a couple of years ago, I decided that life was too short to not buy the guitars you want, in the colours you want – so I sold pretty much all my guitars, and bought a Fiesta Red Strat – now... the thing is – once I had it, and only once I had it – I grew to realise, that the colour I had wanted for so many years – no longer matched who I was, I didn't *feel* like playing a red guitar – even though it was my favourite colour. My psychology – did not match the guitar I was playing, it wasn't me. Same with Sherwood Green – on paper it is my second favourite colour, so I bought one – and it was a fantastic guitar... but – it just didn't illicit any feeling in me, it didn't *feel* like *me*.

Then I got an Olympic White – and... well – the rest, as they say – is history.

    ALL HAIL OLYMPIC WHITE!!!

i left the house to buy a butterscotch tele, found 3, did not like them and bought a car tele.

classic series 60's teles at that time were car, white or black so red became my first choice when it would never normally even be one.

the 3 rules of a guitar purchase:

    1. What it looks like
    2. What it looks like

Color's not my first criterion, but it is important. Most models come in at least one color I can deal with, so it's never been too much of an issue. There are some colors I just won't buy, though, not b/c they're bad looking necessarily, just not my thing. Most blue guitars, for example (except sonic), fiesta red is another one, probably yellow, definitely purple, any metallic finish, etc.

Sometimes it depends on the guitar, too. I would never buy an orange or probably a green strat, but I'd buy orange or green if it were a gretsch. And maybe other examples that I can't think of right now.

Color comes right below whether the serial number is odd or even.

It's not really that important to me, unless it's just so butt ugly that I can't stand it, but a cool color on an otherwise good guitar is like a bonus.

That being said, I have no desire to own a pink guitar.
