After I saved a Harley Benton ES335 copy from the trash by re-glueing the headstock, I found something close to me that will be a bit more interesting- why do I do this to myself? What sick mind would even consider picking this up? Well me I guess… I know it’s bad, I know it may never play again, and maybe I will end up stashing it in the attic, but I’m gonna pay 30 bucks for it and that’s all. Anybody got some cheap recommendations for tuners? Have some pics of this tragedy I’ll burden myself with:

At least that one has already been repaired and just needs tuners and strings.

Anybody got recommendations for tuners? I guess I’ll order some budget brand locking tuners, they are like 25 bucks- but first I gotta see if I get that far

I’d pay 30 bucks for that just for the challenge.

Must have previously belonged to a wannabee rock star. with unfulfilled desires. Gotoh, Schaler, are both good.

There a a lot of Chinese tuners on the Internet that work very well. When looking always check the consumer ratings, even though some are phony.

I'd pay the $30. It would save me time and trouble of doing that to another SG. :p

If you use more tape, you won't need the wire. :D

Yeah, I found some by the budget brand of the biggest retailer here, they got great reviews although they’re only 25 bucks- will try them soon enough :) as to the sad past of this SG- no idea who was trying to impersonate Pete Townshend :whistling:

So, I picked this poor thing up today and its certainly interesting. It seems to me that somebody tried to glue it together before, maybe even using the tape to fixate the headstock? Didnt work, I can say this much already... Anyway, I got to work immediately and used one some all purpose petrol to clean up the mess left by the tape. Still waiting on my syringes to apply the Tite bond properly, so the only other thing I did until now was cleaning the disgusting fretboard- finger gunk galore! At least the frets seem decent, I will polish them soon and see what else I can do :)

I have 2 R9’s and the Les Paul I’m most likely to grab first around the house is an epiphone that I bought for $80 with a neck /headstock break that I fixed. The neck broke at the sixth fret and the headstock and first five frets were long gone. I grafted another neck onto it. The truss rod was sticking out in midair! It’s a little smoker with a big ole ‘70’s Gibson-shaped headstock now. It’s got dimarzio 36th anniversary pickups with CTS pots and ‘50’s wiring in it

I picked up some generic locking tuners from Musiclily via Amazon for about $25. They were online tuners for the strat copy I've been working on upgrading, but I'm sure you can find some 3x3 tuners for about the same price.

Those are nice guitars if you can get it put back together.

I believe you will find that the original tuners had the smaller vintage sized posts. So, you will need to ream them to 10 mm. That is, assuming that the reason they are missing isn't because they were replaced in the past and the previous owner already had upgraded the tuners on there.. then kept them because they were valuable.

A smaller tuner like a Grover mini is nice because they don't add as much weight. You can have a bit of a headstock dive problem with heavy tuners. But there are other ways around that.
