Congrats! That is a beauty. I have been wanting a guitar with mini hums like that. I remember that model. It's kind of an upgrade from the "special" since it has block inlays, but no neck binding like the "standard." It's a great workhorse guitar. I had an SG faded special for a few years and was surprised at how versatile it was. The weirdest part for me was getting used to the neck feeling like it was shifted a few frets to the left. Mine was a neck diver, but a good, wide leather strap fixed that. FWIW, Joe Bonamassa (love him or hate him) had a really good youtube about using tone and vol controls on his LP to get a plethora of tones. I think it's worth a look. Also, I recall doing a search for "jazz on a SG" and found a video of a guy from Italy playing a jazz standard and it sounded fantastic. Anyway, hope you enjoy your SG!

Keep in mind that mini-humbuckers are a bit different than regular humbuckers, as well. They respond a little differently than regular humbuckers, as the magnetic field is smaller and tighter. I like both regular HBs and minis, though many prefer regular HBs, on the one hand, or P-90s (going the other direction). Minis are somewhere in between those two.

Very interesting, I have thinking about that exact guitar. There was a thread on TDPRI recently where someone referred to the SG as “the Tele of Gibsons.” The devil-horn look has never appealed to me, but maybe I just need to get over that.
Can you let us know what kind of price range you were in for that?

It really was a leap for me to get over the way it looks. I mean they look great, but not really my style. I tried to get a similar sound from a Tele Deluxe, but it wasn't the same. Maybe it's the mahogany or the scale, but once I settled into this guitar a bit it's very sweet and playable.

I paid a little over $700 for it, including the snazzy Gibson "soft case," which is really nice. It was in basically unplayed condition. That seems to be about the going rate for these.

The 2018 model I have has the mini humbuckers and cosmetic "downgrades" from the more expensive Standard model (satin body vs gloss, silkscreened headstock vs inlays, and no fretboard binding). 2019 models replaced the mini hums with p90s and retail for like $1500. So good deals are to be had on the (slightly) used market!

Reading this thread has made me have the perverted idea of putting 2 Gibson P90s I have in a Strat:eek:

Thanks! I'd always wanted one, but there was never one available locally. A year or so ago, a fellow forumite on another guitar site, whom I'd known online for a decade or more, casually mentioned that he never played his and was thinking of selling it. Even though we'd never met, and were on opposite sides of the US, I immediately messaged him.

850 bucks later, voila! Minty fresh w/ohsc.

Nice! I'm with @Neil.C , that TV Yellow Special is fantastic. That's one that's eluded me so far.

Also a Gibson supporter. If owning one is weird, I have issues.

Glad the OP punched thru the fallacy about Gibson. Its really funny, if Gibson was as bad as the vocal minority suggests, there'd be no Gibson, lol. Gladly, Gibson's sales for the last decades is proof that most aren't buying the inflated criticism.

    BIG CONGRATS! Beautiful guitar!

I was a strictly Fender guy for decades- my mantra was "I LOVE the way Les Pauls sound...in OTHER people's hands!"

Then a guy showed me the way. Now I get to love both Fenders and Gibsons! (A good thing IMO)!

Your friend let you in on a big secret to unlocking Gibson tone- the volume and tone controls do not need to be maxed out! Those volume and tone controls are extremely interactive. I'll wager you'll find a whole new world of tonal bliss with that beautiful SG!

    ENJOY!!

Whether you like him or not- a good starter tutorial:

True on Fenders as well, in reverse. A lot of Fender icepick is too much volume and tone knob. Truth be told, both knobs are tone knobs, and volume is best adjusted at the amp.
