I used a plugin for note taking and detailed what I did on each track. It's detailed enough to get me very close to perfectly repeatable. Even used a tape measure and the flashlight on my phone to look through the grill on my amp.

Years ago i was an assistant on a Seven Mary Three record. I was the 4 pm to close shift and when I arrived the engineer was tracking acoustic parts with Thomas. He told me to go in to the live room and bring him some notes or whatever. I don't remember exactly but while doing whatever I bumped the mic. Thomas got a chuckle and told me they had spent a good part of the day finding the right placement. Who knows ... maybe he was messing with me. I was anticipating the engineer to scold me but he didn't. He was just quiet which was equally intimidating with that particular engineer.

Yeah, that would be scary. I have left drum mics up for a week and this room is small. So far I have bonked but not moved any. At the same time, my standards are not super high.

well if you're "tediously placing" you have higher standards than most. And that's not a bad thing at all.

It always made me nervous around that particular engineer if i had to recall my own mix notes. I'd go through all my recall sheets and get a mix set up that was set aside weeks or months prior and pray at the console with him that it sounded the same as the DAT backup LOL. He was a very intimidating guy. I think it was his calmness if that makes sense. I just wanted to do a good job for him.

Yep, edge of cone and 2/3 in. Both off axis. Fix the phasing and mix to suit in post. Then fugghedaboudit.

Sometimes...notes are very important. We all don't have the same ears or hear things the same way. And if you knew some folks background...and how they hear...you might comment differently. ;)
