Can i use my Chet Baker quote now?
"It takes a pretty good drummer to be better than no drummer."
You may not know it, but an awful lot of them are doing you a favour by not showing up, LOL.
And that's not me being bitter, just realistic...
then again, i pretty much do everything myself nowadays.
The entire band always shows up on time, in tune, and ready to play, and we don't argue
    amongst ourselves all that much.

I know... the last one we tried was probably worse than no drummer...

I'll do it for you. I recently switched from guitar to drums. Haven't touched an axe in months.

Remember, you'll need to walk two steps behind the musicians now...

Most drummers spend their time tripping up the musicians.

why no one has tried to best this in subsequent comments? simple. group acknowledgement that it can't be done and the best thing to do to preseve all our dignities is to let this outlier example of topical wit wither on the vine before it wins all the contests and our own jokes are deemed unfit.

also, it's much better to tell a story about the time you tried to fill the role of drummer in a punk trio than it is to tell the story of the time you thought better of it...

How do you get a drummer to stop playing?

If you’re a one man band you can only have musical differences with yourself. But, group outings can be pretty lonely.

That's what those 'friends' are for, LOL.
They make the group outings and gigs a lot less lonely.

    Reasons it might work:

Original music so I don't have to be emulating anyone.

As stated, more stoner, groove punk so tempos may be reasonable.

If we are going to be recording, this guy I am talking to is pretty advanced in his audio production so an interesting drum part with a flaw might still be useable.

I have good meter and aptitude and the reps I would get working on songs probably will bring my playing along.

    Still taking drum lessons.
