A couple guitars and handful of pedals ago, I told myself that I was all set, I just need to focus on practicing and saving up for my dream acoustic, a Gibson Hummingbird.

But my goals shifted a little bit, I've gotten way more into pedals and looping, playing with "soundscapes". And I've been using Musicians Friend as a crutch, building up my repertoire with the excuse of earning "rewards points" that I'll eventually apply to the one guitar I feel is missing: a Fender Jazzmaster. That was my New Year's resolution, and I have a lot of points now.

The trouble is, I don't need or want anything else. I need to break my habit of browsing gear and using these stupid points as an alibi.

On approximately July 23, all of my points will be redeemable. That's what I need help with: don't buy any more gear until it's officially National Buy A Jazzmaster Day. Then I'll be done with MF, too.

For a guy who has trouble going more than a couple weeks, I'll need your help. Maybe this thread will stay alive that long?

"Opportunity knocks. Temptation just leans on the doorbell."

Those reward points are that temptation, and you were awarded them for the precise reason that MF really hopes you will cave in and buy something you don't need, and maybe don't even want that much. It's like a devil on your shoulder going: "Would you do it for $998? OK, what about $999...? Shall we call it a round...?"

You're being played, and you know it. That's why you started this thread. Let's a all try to save the planet by only buying stuff we really, really want. :thumb:

"A soundscape is a sound or combination of sounds that forms or arises from an immersive environment. The study of soundscape is the subject of acoustic ecology or soundscapeecology."

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundscape

To explain it more simply, think of the effect-laden approach of U2's The Edge. Creating atmospheres, as much as specific notes.

As a wise wikipedia once said:

"A landscape is the visible features of an area of land, its landforms, and how they integrate with natural or man-made features.[1] A landscape includes the physical elements of geophysically defined landforms such as (ice-capped) mountains, hills, water bodies such as rivers, lakes, ponds and the sea, living elements of land cover including indigenous vegetation, human elements including different forms of land use, buildings, and structures, and transitory elements such as lighting and weather conditions. Combining both their physical origins and the cultural overlay of human presence, often created over millennia, landscapes reflect a living synthesis of people and place that is vital to local and national identity."

Now just change the "visible" stuff to "aural" stuff. Let your imagination and emotions flow through it. Trippy.

Which modifies which, the "old" or the "git"? :)

You're really on a roll with my threads lately!

Just make music and dive into your “soundscapes” and squeeze every sound out of what you already have instead of looking for the next piece of gear that you think will finally get you there. Easier said than done, I know.:D

No, that's true. The more I play, the less I think about OPG. (You down with OPG? Yeah, you know me!)

I get pulled in many directions, tho, and find myself procrastinating-browsing too much during those small windows.

Nah, pretty sure I'm special and different. :)

Actually, with the exception of The Kid passing me that 20% off coupon, this place has been pretty good for my gas.

I will be in the support group. Every time I say I'm not interested in buying more pedals I end up seeing deals on Reverb for pedals i want.

coming here and asking for "dont buy anything else" support is sort of like going to your favorite bar and asking for support in your effort to stop drinking! ;)
