When I was playing “professionally”, my main rig was a stray, 2 Tube Screamers and a Vox Wah, with a delay thrown in every once and a while for some flavour, and I would get so many compliments on my tone back then.

In the many years that have passed since that time I’ve tried so many “boutique” overdrives and can’t quite find the right tone….I’m thinking it might be time for me to just go back to when I was pretty happy with my tone and fire up the lowly Tube Screamer again….I wonder if it would still sound as good to me as it used to….

I'm glad you gave the stray a good home :p

I bet it will, your original setup sounds like a winner in my book.:thumb:

Others can make tubescreamers work and even sound great.

I just can't. I've probably owned a dozen in one form or another and never can get them to sound right for me.

I've never gotten along with TubeScreamers. But if I did, I'd use a pair, like I always use a pair of overdrive du jour of the day. You will no doubt be very happy again.

    Either or both.
Just curious as to what you like.

    I have a Marshall DSL40c, a Roland Bolt-60, and Blackstar HT-1R
They work OK for me but I’m not a Pro.

Back in the day I was playing either a fender twin, or a ‘59 bassman reissue….now I’m playing a 1958 Supro 1606 “super”

I'd say one TS with a cheap Timmy clone in front and call it done. Lots of sounds there for lots of songs.

The tube screamer works best with a fender such as the twin. Or the bass man.
The blackface style tone stack has a mid cut, the ts, fills that gap. This formula has worked over and over again, and it just works, and works well.
Something cool happens with sound doing a cut and boost, same thing happening with a pultec eq, or a Neumann u87 mic.

on a Marshall this is not the case.
    Not sure about a supro.

    just an engineers perspective.

I use a TS-9 with a Marshall Guv'Nor in front of it. Into a Marshall DSL20. I get a very "Billy Gibbons" style tone.

BTW, if you think a Tubescreamer has a lot of mids, you ain't seen nothing until you visit the Guv'Nor!
