I have four partscasters and am considering purchasing a genuine Fender Stratocaster to use as a reference point for current and future pickup and guitar projects. More than likely it won't get much playing time.

    What would you recommend?

I'd get an Ultra Lux with the Stainless Steel frets but I would play it a lot. Or go through the build your own Strat on the Fender site and chose the neck and pickups you like most.

It depends on what you're going for, of course.

But I think one would be wise to snatch up a good example of a reissue: '57, '62, or, gods in your favor, '54 or '56.

Prices may drop -eventually- but they increased so quickly in the past months that I don't see them decreasing anytime soon.

What sort are you looking to build?

I would recommend to spend your extra thousands you have spare, to commission someone to build you a fully carbon fiber strat.......pretty much indestructible even if the zombies come after you....now if you still want a..genuine strat...i would get an Eric Johnson one.

Sounds to me like you've got it covered.

But, for the sake of the question, a Classic Vibe 50's. It's everything a Strat should be, with the exception of a 3-way switch . Spend the leftover change on your builds.

The Mod Shop, sort of like the "light" version of the Custom shop. Multiple neck offerings, P/U's hardware, woods, finishes. All of the combinations can give you a fairly unique Stat of your choosing. I think I got out of there for about 2K after KY taxes.

You can choose options, and as you add this or change that, it generates a picture of what things are going to look like. The pickups where were I screwed up, didn't like them and bought a set of Seymour Duncans Antiquity Texas Specials. Now it's just mine, and it's fairly unlikely anyone else has the exact same guitar.

Also they change options fairly frequently, so if you can't get what you like, just wait a week or two and go back.

The Ultra Lux would be a great choice too, I think.

I have an American Original 60s. It's a great guitar.

I'd buy the one I could sell for most, then build the best partscaster I could (oops I already did that - do I have to have another one?) and use the leftovers to go on holiday.

Oh, the Eric Johnson is also a great option! I might actually prefer this answer to my original response.

My Fender Ultra is essentially perfect. (I paid $1800 out the door at a local shop last February). For a little extra you can get the same guitar Ultra Luxe with SS frets.

With me, even playing my Ultra a lot, it is unlikely I will ever wear the standard frets out enough to have to replace them.

Is the EJ or the Ultra a better choice for a guitar you don't intend to play? Which one is better for not playing?

I think the EJ will appreciate better, no? Nitro-finish, vingtage appointments, artist signature...

especially if you pick up the "Virginia" model

In that price range I'd look for a used 1998-newer AVRI.

    I wouldn't spend 2k on a guitar I'm not going to play.

I'd buy a mint condition Strat Plus in one of the more coveted colors

    ...but I'm a Plus addict.

    a used classic series 50's or 60's or 70's.

they are copies of vintage fenders made by fender and far less than 2k.
