If you could only keep one acoustic...

Of the ones I have now, my Guild D40 traditional.

I do like the shorter scale Gibson J-45, it’s comfortable and mellow. But technically it’s not my guitar (I’m just minding it indefinitely for the owner), and the Guild is superior to it acoustically anyway.

Someday when I get a nice 00 or Concert, I might change my mind. Or if I ever get that Hummingbird.
As requested:

Alvarez Yairi DY-62c that I got on my 18th birthday. As a gift, my father split the cost with me.

I've had it for 31 years and it sounds better now than ever.

The top is cedar which is very soft and dents easily.

The back and sides are curly mahogany.

The neck is mahogany with an ebony board. It is the easiest acoustic neck to fret chords and bend strings on that I've ever played.

It has Kazuo Yairi's signature on it.

I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it at Select Guitars in Norwalk CT.

It's been everywhere with me and I want to be buried with it

I have added 3 other Yairis since and would like to add a few more

That’s a tough one. I own a bunch. I’ve built around 400 custom guitars from scratch during my career, and have remanufactured over 2000 more guitars.

The guitar on the left is one I built for myself 20 years ago and it has been my main performance guitar for most of that time. The guitar in the middle is one my son built for me last year from a set of premium Brazilian Rosewood that I purchased in 1985 when I owned the Mossman Guitar Company. I will never sell either of these two. The one my son built is my most prized possession and is the best new guitar I’ve ever played and I’ve played them all.

The guitar on the right is my latest acoustic build and now it belongs to my granddaughter and it’s her most prized possession.

I had two until recently. A Martin 000-15, made of sapele rather than mahogany. And a Collings OM1, by far the most high-end and priciest guitar I've owned.

Now I only have the 000-15.

It wasn't to the level of the Collings, but its mellower, less zingy tone works better in a small room (and doesn't trigger my tinnitus like the OM1 did), and I don't feel guilty owning it.

And some medical/dental expenses came up, and the Collings was worth more that I paid for it a decade ago (although I took a hit on a G&L I also sold), so I let it go.

Now I'm rediscovering the 000-15 and wondering why I felt I needed a much fancier guitar in the first place.

I thought this little Waterloo would have trouble keeping up with dreadnoughts, but it cuts through.
It's also excellent at solo jazz and pop.
Keeper.

My keeper and favorite acoustic is my Yamaha FG800. It’s a very budget friendly guitar I was given a few years ago. I broke my foot pretty badly at work and was stuck at home, and it was during a time when I had basically no guitar or bass gear, so getting this FG800 was a godsend, and got me back into playing guitar.
I still pick it up daily, really several times a day, and it never lets me down.
It sounds full and warm and clear, stays in tune forever, and has perfect intonation and low action (after a little saddle work).
