Jam all night on it, years ago i used to sit through a couple of playings of the album and just play rythm, sit in with the rythm section and have a ball.

Play something out of your comfort zone. If you don't play metal, play metal and what not. I improve when I do it...

Ha HA its all about breathing living spirit rhythm for you, my mistake at church was always playing licks while the preacher was speaking trying to imitate the church organ bit. Untill I was told to shut up:cry:

    +1.

Playing blues (or one genre in general) all day will not expand your horizons ;)

I think, when you step away for something for a little while and try something else, you come back with a fresh perspective.

I guess once the player is comfortably stuck into playing one style, and one style only, the creativity gets lost.

Let's say, hypothetically, you like playing open chord songs on acoustic guitar... you LOVE it so much and you feel comfortable in it, but you don't bother to learn playing anything else. I mean it's all good... but you won't progress in your learning and training... and after a while, your open chord songs will sound the same to you... and it'll get boring for you.

Mixing it up is not a bad thing :D you won't lose your chops, you'll actually improve them. And you'll also sound more interesting to others when you throw in unexpected, yet incredibly fitting stuff
