Same thing Ant, same room same amp and location, thought I had the sound I really liked. Next day it just didn’t sound that good.

Perception is a subjective experience, and as such it is impossible to separate it completely from other stuff like what kind of day you've had and what mood you're in.

I don’t experience this. I sometimes might re-adjust the action or pickup height from a previous day because with fresh ears and perception I know I got it wrong.
The biggest difference I hear is in the performance. Sometimes I play well other times I’m sloppy and I know when I’m doing either.

Yeah I totally get it. You can have your amp pointing right at you, sounding sweet. Move to the side and it sounds like someone turned the treble all the way down. That's my experience anyway :)

This may seem silly, but even a slight change in where you are standing or sitting could change the way you hear the sound. I would have to imagine there is a sweet spot in the room where there is the ideal convergence of sound waves reflecting off the back and side walls.

Not silly at all. From reading all the posts there seems to be a common agreement that mood, how you’re feeling, moving the amp slightly, or just no explanation can alter what you hear.

My stereo speakers sound different from room to room. When running sound, the same gear, always had to setup the 1/3 oct EQ differently from venue to venue. The room is part of the equation. OR...

Guilt. It's the purloined fruit syndrome. Your guilt is interfering with your ability to enjoy the new amp. You must rid yourself of the guilt or the amp. What kind of amp? :)

Haven’t we all had the experience of playing a perfectly set-up guitar one day, and a clumsy hunk of wood the next?

That is the reason $800+ guitar pedals are sold. I saw a guy on YouTube use it.... I’ve convinced myself I need a JTM45 Bluesbreaker reissue because a guy 60 years ago made it sound good. It will sound like garbage with my playing and setup. But, alas I think it will help me achieve something I don’t have.

Unless it's a one-off that might be a one-time opportunity, I always go back on another day to try (whatever) again. Often I wonder why I was so excited about it the first time or why I missed some major aspect that makes it less attractive.

I’m ashamed to admit that I bought my Holy Grail amp with the delusion that I’d sound different.

Gotta be. It’s the how you think you sound on your head vs how you really sound. It’s happened to me too
