So I came across this strat that the owner originally listed for way more before realizing that the neck might have been swapped from a previous owner and there's no Serial Number. Basically, he bought this guitar 30ish years ago and used it for several years when he played in bands. What are we looking at here? Is it a real fender body? A real fender neck? Approximate age? How do we tell these things? It looks pretty damn clean for a 30+ year old guitar. strat3.jpg strat2.jpg Strat1.jpg headstock1.jpg strat3.jpg strat2.jpg Strat1.jpg headstock1.jpg

    I see a guitar I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

It's a Partscaster from various sources.

It certainly is not a US Fender of any era. Maybe the bridge is...... maybe.

80's style MIJ string trees, but a plastic trus Rod insert don't match. So maybe a Mexican neck with MIJ string trees. No close up of the tuners but they aren't MIM or MIA. Poorly shaped nut. If it were a legit Fender neck there would be no need to remove the Fender label then draw one on.

Nothing on that body looks Fender except maybe the bridge (not close enough pic)

Looks like the headstock nomenclature was drawn with a Sharpie...I'd say the whole thing is as genuine as a three dollar bill.

I don't know much about guitars but the first thing I thought to myself was "this either ancient to the point that they were handwriting logos or this is just sad" :D

I feel bad for the guy. He's must be in his 70's, originally listed it for 1500$ and now he's down to 500$. His ad explains that this is how he bought it and it's always been like this. I'm guessing he got a LOT of messages over the last 2 days.

Start with the decal. Along with that, I would assume there is no Fender anything on this guitar.

I love super-budget (under $100) strats, and I don't think I would touch this one.

When you're spending hard-earned on a guitar, forget the presumption of innocence. It's guilty until proven innocent.
So, you need to assume there's nothing genuine about that guitar.
But hey if you like the way it plays and you can live with that headstock, then buy it. But don't pay any more than you would pay for a cheap knock-off on aliexpress.

I'd pass if it was more than about $30.

    Hmmm. No, I'd just pass.

As a keyboard player, this whole knockoffs and shady dealer's business is wild. Once in a while, you'll come across a guy trying to sell a synth or something with a few sticky/tact switches but nothing to this extent. I think I'm going to just buy new and hopefully, I'll have learned enough to spot these things by the time I look for another guitar.

The neck could be. Nothing else.

I forgot I used to have a 1991 MIK Squier that I gave to my daughter. It did have the same string trees & a plastic truss rod plug. Assuming those are Gotoh tuners, you've likely got the neck.

But that body is something else entirely.

    Edit.

Come on. If he really bought this 30 years ago, he was in his 40's. You have to have really, really bad eyesight (read: be blind) not to see that decal was handdrawn. And you have to be very gullible to believe someone did that to a neck that already had that same decal on it before but was accidentally sanded off? Something like that?
He knows full well what this is.

I would not consider that Fender anything, and would not deem it worth setting on fire let alone throwing it in a wood chipper. Perhaps just bury it in the ground somewhere.
