I bought this AV 54 Strat back in 2015 used for a smoking deal. It was chipped up but not abused. I wanted a heavy relic because that seemed to be all the rage back then, well and still today.

So I figured I’d give it a try. Using a can of compressed air upside down caused some cool checking but blew half the nitro off. I was so upset. I ruined it! I was going to strip it and send it to get refinished.

I googled heavy relics and found a killer looking Strat and it was worse than mine. So maybe I’ll go farther and just live with it. I now go more for the journeyman relic look or NOS if possible. I still love a good looking heavy relic but my taste has changed. Here’s the inspiration pic and then my mistakes. I definitely learned from this one! It still is my #1 and feels so good

Agreed. I don't think most of us will snivel at a well done, tasteful, believable relic job.

This is not one of them.

I would try to pull some of that stain out of the neck, especially the back, but that's just me.

Nice job if you're into heavy relics.

Agreed, it’s pretty bad and for the neck stain, it’s a little lighter since those pics were taken. I’m actually on the hunt for another one of these and I will just leave it as is!

The pickup covers were a bit much but the body looks cool.

The black neck kinda makes me feel dirty.

I didn’t want to touch the neck actually but the body was so bad I had no choice. It was a fun project for sure but I’ve learned over the years, less is more. Here’s the inspiration pic of a actual 54 Strat that was a Reverb and 54 pickups that were also on reverb 423A3C14-2B35-4557-B185-2A2CA16EEBA6.jpeg 73B69EBF-396F-43EF-95ED-B91827689BE5.jpeg

I bought, well, my wife bought me this last year for our anniversary. My only beef with it is the super jumbo fret wire. I dig the AAA flame neck, but I always wonder what would it look like without the distress.

    .

Does the guitar feel like satin all over? Or sharp chipped paint? Smooth it out if not.
Make sure the metal bits have no sharp edges.

Fret level/setup so it plays like Custom Shop+

Those are the secrets of a perfect Relic.

Doesn’t look like natural play wear to me, also never seen broken pick up covers before (and the plastics look pretty clean compared to everything else). But different strokes/different folks and all.

I'd refinish it. The wear does not look natural.

It doesn't matter what any of us think.
If you like it, leave it alone and wear it out in good health.

It actually feels like a well worn glove. The fret ends are perfect. I have this thing dialed in a far as a setup goes. It’s super slick all over. Looks disgusting but it plays way better than it looks.

If Stratocaster was a religion, that guitar might doom you to Hell.

That neck looks wild, actually the whole guitar. Love that colour. I’m waiting on a MusiKraft 5a flame roasted neck now for my latest partscaster project
