Our humble little Utah Blues Festival kicked off it’s 5th year in good form downtown last night. My wife and I went down and caught Sue Foley and Tab Benoit. I’d never seen Sue before, she’s a great player and singer, really good. She paid tribute to Albert Collins on her tele with her song ‘Ice Queen’. She hails from Canada, by way of Austin these days, so Ice Queen is a good nickname. She had it on her guitar strap and she did the Iceman’s tele licks some justice on her pink paisley tele. She brought out one of her mentors, and tonight’s headliner, Ronnie Earl, for a couple of songs. We only had tickets for last night so it was a real bonus to get to see Ronnie play a couple on his old checked finish white strat, killer licks from Ronnie. I hadn’t seen Tab Benoit since the mid-90’s when he played our long gone old blues hangout, The Dead Goat Saloon, which he mentioned when he said he’d been coming here for 25 years now. He burned it down last night, bayou style, such a killer player, singer, and blues ambassador. He really brought the house down. Anyway, I’ll shut up now, great show, here are a few photos.
