That's because he wasn't there. The Jeff Beck Group was invited to play, since they were already on tour in the US, but Jeff decided to break up the band during said tour, and flew home.

Jimi at Woodstock (my avatar) - mind blowing!

    Santana a close second.

BTW For all Brits on here, there is a programme on Woodstock and a second about Jimi on BBC4 tonight.

I think they were the heaviest rock act. Closer to what the early 70s would sound like than the 60s. I read Zeppelin didn’t go because they didn’t wanna be pigeonholed as a 60’s band. Here’s what it would have been like as they played Texas Pop on August 31.

As an add, I distinctly remember the news reports citing that some entrepreneurial Types were selling bottles of water to the crowd and charging ONE DOLLAR for a bottle !!!

    I could hardly believe it.
ONE DOLLAR - for WATER !!!
    OMG - a sacrilege

( And Mountain was my fav band - TY )

Joe Cocker demonstrating his artistry on vocals, air guitar (lefty, no less), and air keyboards simultaneously...
plus, bonus points for some very cool shoes.

I was not quite 5 at the time, but thinking of all the great shows I missed over the next 3 decades, I'm pretty sure I would have missed Woodstock too.

Speaking of Woodstock, we had a talk the other day me and my wife (both 30ish) wondering what kind of artist was actually at that show on that day...

Nowadays this is all great legendary bands but back then, I mean there’s no Beatles member, no Elvis, no Clapton, no Dylan no zeppelin etc etc

It seems like the BIG names weren’t actually all there and we were wondering what is jefferson airplane back then or CCR or joe cocker etc etc?

Also, anyone could lineup 10 bands with similar notoriety that would make it a similar show if woodstock was held in 2019?

No doubt Jefferson Airplane was a big band for the type that would be attending the festival. CCR released three classic albums in 1969(how the f did they do this) and one in 1968 but Willie wasn’t until after the festival and I’m sure they were already getting those #2 singles on the radio. The Dead. Joplin. Baez. Santana was an unknown and their first album wasn’t even released yet! Hendrix... obviously huge. The Who.. maybe the biggest. The Band had only released their first album but the hip kids might have known them for working with Dylan... its an interesting question because some were bigger at the time and some are bigger now. CSNY is another that that was probably more known for their previous work but the first album had been out for a few months. Sly was a big deal.. I’m only 29. Someone feel free to correct me on this stuff I have spouted.
*Zeppelin wouldn’t have been a big deal at the time. The Airplane for one would have been a bigger name.

Yeah like hendrix for instance, was he such a big deal that he was kept for last over someone like The Who or is it just circumstances that led to this or what!?

Hard to put yourself in the 50 years ago context

I think I remember that Hendrix was late but I’m sure he was a big headliner anyways.
