Last I seen him, a few weeks back on TV he had Fender Strats with what looked to be Duncan Rails for pickups.
They sounded damn good, thought they all looked quite good given their ages.
I believe he just turned 66 the other day they said on the radio.

styx is still great. have seen them multiple times in the last 5-10 years.

JY is great at guitar. his voice is kinda sucky when he's the lead singer.. it always has been.. should leave that to keyboard guy and tommy shaw. but he's great. He and shaw make for a great pair.

Agreed.. and JY needs to lay off the plastic surgery.. On the VH1 classic concert he had that Botox grin going on..

James Young is arguably one of the best guitarists Styx ever had, as much as I love Tommy Shaw.

The back cover of Caught In The Act Live shows James Young playing a Fender Stratocaster. I have had the album for years, and I might post a picture here sometime just to prove it.

On the other hand, does anyone else think Tommy Shaw looks like Machine Gun Kelly?

Saw them on the Pieces Of Eight tour . Still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen , they were tight and at their height .

I caught them playing warm up for Aerosmith.
They were very good...I walked out on Aerosmith. So loud it actually hurt

I remember a guy tried to stab me with a knife at a Styx show. I immediately disarmed him and unfortunately he fell and broke his cheek bone and 3 right ribs. I handed him off to security and that was that. But the Styx show was great!

I got to see them ... well, it's probably been ten years ago now. It was Kansas, Styx, and Foreigner. Many of the members were not original, but I got to see Rich Williams, Shaw and JY, and Mick Jones, so I was good.

One of the VERY few bands I’ve ever paid money to go see. About 6 years ago at Spirit Mountain Casino. They were great. Their sound guy was an IDIOT. Took him like 30 minutes to figure out that pushing the system to 12 wasn’t going to make it quit horribly distorting. I knew it wasn’t the P.A. because I knew the P.A. and the guy who owns it. Funny that the crowd actual started clapping when he turned it down to a respectable non-distorting volume. Then it was great. You know it’s bad when after the show the completely non musical and non technical players at a card table are discussing the distortion during the game....

I saw a video of a Styx concert in Las Vegas some time back (yeah, I do like them), but I think JY was playing a red G&L Strat. Not totally sure of that, but it sure looked like one! Of course he had about a dozen picks stuck up under the pickguard.

And an Ibanez ST200 Electric Guitar That was also from the Caught In The Act cover (and a pitch black Fender Stratocaster being played by Tommy Shaw:

I think when John Curulewski was in Styx, he played a few Fender Stratocaster Electric guitars.

I also just saw a Styx live with the contemporary youth orchestra concert from Cleveland, Ohio in May Of 2006. James JY Young was playing a cherry Red Fender Stratocaster, and Tommy Shaw was playing both a blonde Fender Telecaster and a lime green Fender Jazzmaster.
