Yeah, Kiplinger did it in a balloon. much cheaper. In the early 60's. Then he broke all the skydiving records on the way back. Raised the bar quite a bit.

The New Shepard booster achieved a vertical landing before SpaceX did, if I recall right, but that was a sub-orbital flight. A SpaceX Falcon booster achieved the same within days of that flight, and it did so after delivering a commercial payload into orbit. The true vertical landing innovation is likely better attributed to the McDonnell Douglas DC-X project in the 1990's. (I think some of the DC-X people got picked up by Blue Origin.)

The Space Shuttle was an orbital vehicle. The definition of outer space varies with who you talk to, but many accept the Karman line (100 km) as a start. Sustained orbit is well beyond that, not just in elevation but in terms of delta-v. In terms of delta-v, once you make low Earth orbit you're pretty much half way to anywhere in the solar system.

SpaceX has vertical landed multiple space vehicle parts/rockets/whatever they are long before the one Blue Origin just did.

Edit: SpaceX landed a couple in 2016 but apparently Blue Origin also vertical landed their 1st rocket around the same time SpaceX did those first 2 landings in 2016. So, they've both been at it and making their systems even better since then.

I really appreciate how when he landed he mentioned 'thanks to all the Amazon customers and employees who made this possible'. Steve "I guess it helps when you don't pay taxes or employees."

That was just over the top creepy, like an overlord who used slaves to build a monument to himself.

So, I guess that would be a Full Frontal Rocket Launch?
