The only guitars I’ve seen that shredded in that location are Billie Joe Armstrong’s because he slings the guitar so low that he’s picking the strings over the fretboard basically

The picture below is a screen shot of a Youtuber I follow rather closely. I’ve seen the wear slowly appear on the guitar during the last year of his videos. Originally this was a nitro-finished fiesta red Strat with a 3TB under coat. The guitar was relied by the luthier to expose some of the 3TB. It’s very obvious which portions of wood were revealed by the maker, and what part are from play.

With what ? A claw hammer?

I'm sorry, all this aggressive damage is just generating a bunch of guitars which are eyesores.
Calling anything remotely like that "relic" is wishful thinking, at best.

Never understood why someone would relic a guitar intentionally. It's in the hands, not the paint (or lack thereof).

Maybe if it was originally owned by an orangutan with a screwdriver.

Lots of Strats that have been played religiously since the 50s and 60s don’t look nearly this ridiculous.

Some of the notable real life relics were purposely or accidentally abused, like SRV’s and Rory Gallagher’s.

I’m not saying that it’s impossible that it’s authentic, but you’re right, if it is that authentically abused, it probably has other issues. But I think it’s an ugly relic job on a relatively expensive guitar.

Looks like the seller used a disk grinder as a pick.

That's just stupid. No wonder it's for sale.

This thread’s comments confirm that most Strat-Talk posters are soft picking collectors.
If you can’t understand how this type of wear happens, then I feel sorry for your audience.
