I have been looking for a different practice amp for a while and just haven't found anything that compares to this amp. I put in a Jensen mod speaker and it really gives me a sound I like. The clean is about average but I really like the drive channel, it's pretty tubey sounding and is very responsive to my volume control. Anyone else like these?

I had a Peavy Classic 30 with a 15" speaker that was a great amp.

Scotty Moore used Peavy amps the last twenty years or so and they sounded great!

Yep, my very first amp was a Rage 158. I LOVE how resonant and boomy it sounds when turned up...it's very satisfying to hear. I bought mine used; if I understand the serial numbers correctly, mine was one of the last Rage models made in Mississippi.

I don't have a rage, but an Envoy instead. If you don't particularly like the clean chanel, may I suggest you try it again with a good 1MOhm buffer between guitar and amp? Then you could also try it clean boosted or EQed. You will thank me later.

I cut the legs, and lifted two of the cliping diodes on the drive stage, made the distortion more subtle.

But the main issue is that the power transformer is a really noisy cricket. If it hadn't been so, I'd try to put in a jensen too!

Its fairly easy, just locate the two sets of asymetrical diode pairs in the preamp section. Snip of the leg on one set. Just one leg, bend the diode a little bit up, makes it easier to revert the mod.

Just google the schematics. The pair are called CR3and5 and CR4and6 in the 1992 schematics, they are standard 1N4148 diodes set up in a clipping stage. I guess you can throw in some leds, or even germanium diodes on that stage in stead of the standard diodes. This is what they do in most boutique pedals.

Rage, Envoy, Studio Pro, Bandit... all great amps.

Gigged with a USA redstripe Bandit and USA redstripe Revolution for a few years.

I'm intrigued by the LED mod, given that 2 of my favorite OD pedals have LED clipping. Does anybody have a sound sample of the dirty channel with LED clipping on this amp?
