Probably some of the best meals they ever ate.

He'd always buy 'Old Yeller' at wallmart for his dogs, and then tell me my dog was going to be sick from eating people food...

If a person is repeatedly taken advantage of, the situation needs to be reassessed.

In other words, Manchild is not the problem.

It's ok to help the guy, just set limits (whatever you feel is appropriate).

The dude obviously doesn't have his shiz together, probably never will.
So like you said... why bother hitting the dog, he doesn't even know he's doing something wrong.

Just set limits and prepare to be disappointed with him, but help him out if you can.

    My opinion

A lot of Americans don't understand Canadian neighbourliness. One of many differences.

    We completely understand and participate.

But there comes a time that the line must be drawn.
In this case, I would have drawn that line years ago.

Like I said... I'd have offered to spend my time to give him a ride to where the truck allegedly was, but I would not simply hand over the keys to my car.

He's going to need someone to give him a ride to the truck anyways... and had the OP done so, maybe both of them would have something to drive right now.

we understand how to be neighborly.
we also understand what being taken advantage of is.
i had a guy that used to bum smokes off of me all the time. it got to be a habit, so finally one day he came up and tried to bum one and i told him no. he was shocked and thought i was kidding. i wasnt. i ended up telling him to get off my property and to never come up to me again or things would get ugly.
that was about 2 years ago. havent seen him in quite some time.

For one very good reason we have different relations with those around us.
    Less suspicion and fear.
Nor was Canada founded on the "every Man for themselves" ethos, more social structure here.

American culture is what it is.
There's no need to apologize, is there?

Offering to spend a half day of my time to take the guy to where his truck is, which would allow him to maybe bring it home, or maybe help him get it running if it won't start is "every man for himself?"

OK, if that's what you want to think, fine.

It's not fear. Suspicion is warranted when history supports it, as it certainly does in this case.
This isn't a good neighbor having a bad week. This is a deadbeat having a bad life, no matter how much help others have provided.

    Won't make a difference.
Neighbor has nothing to lose, no money for bail or trial, the vehicle isn't "stolen", it just isn't available to the owner without having it towed to the dealer to make a new key.
Police won't/can't do anything about what amounts to petty theft.
Civil matter, but again, the guy can't pay with no money, and he will never have money.

    Okay.
It's against the rules to discuss the several major differences between our national attitudes beyond vague references.
I think you missed my point, but respect your view.
