89319E19-A0A7-42FB-9922-CC3245554032.png I dont know why it said I had 49 mbps this morning and now its saying 320 mbps. I had the wife check it and the speed test site she uses said 350 mbps. Which is it? Now she said it was up to 360 so it fluctuates. We are guaranteed 300 mbps.

I think by the mid-90s we were V32/V34 BIS modems at 28800 baud.
I think I got a Demon account about the same time as you, back when there was only Demon and Pipex doing dial-up internet and Demon was a rebranded Pipex reseller anyway.

Those old accoustic couplers were way before internet, they were used in the late 70s/early 80s for point to point dial up comms. About 1200 baud if I recall.

Between then and the mid 90s internet was a University thing but for the rest of us there was the world of the BBS (Bulletin Board System). Consigned to history now, never to be spoken of. My kids wouldn't believe me anyway.

I'd forgotten about all that – and never was involved with those acoustic couplers, although I briefly owned one as part of a job lot I bought. I had Demon and Pipex accounts at one time or another. When my brother was at uni, he started telling me about JANET (the Joint Academic Network), and I couldn't get my head round it at all. Probably only two years later, we were building web sites for some pretty big clients!

I noticed my speed getting slower so I checked mine with spectrum and it was supposed to be 100 and it went down in the 40s so I called them

They thought I needed a new router and send a technician out when I’m plugged in hardwire I can get 200 but in the other room on the laptop Wi-Fi I’m only getting about 85

Good for you! I think some of the data transmission speeds Internet Service Providers quote are ridiculously optimistic. Maybe if they had one customer in a given area, they could achieve it, but the reality is very different. When we're all sharing the same data 'pipe', it's no different to the plumbing in a hotel. If we all decide we'd like a shower at the same time in the morning, there will be less hot water delivered to your bathroom.

ISPs and hotels tend not to emphasize that in their promotional material. :sneaky:

I am humbled to realize how privileged I am. OK, we all lived without broadband for most of our lives, but it is really useful.

    Mine is 25 Mbps

As a former Data Communications Optical Fiber Engineer, I was designing and installing 1 Gbps & 10 Gbps
network connections to the Internet Backbone proper. Today, with DWDM ( DENSE WAVELENGTH DIVISION MULTIPLEXING ) solutions we can achieve speeds ranging from 10 Gb/s to beyond 200 Gb/s.

Personally, I don't have any requirements ( at present ) for anything faster than 25 Meg.
I don't down/upload big files or stream broadcasts. Why pay more?
