The gold is more "transparent"...while the silver has more gain/mids scooped a bit (taking the description from several write-ups). I tend to use the gold more.

If I could only use 2 pedals that are on my board then the Klone into the King of Tone.

Thanks. Not sure where that puts my Tumnus deluxe, as it has more eq shaping.

Idk, but the Tumnus probably covers both gold/silver and then some. A very nice pedal from the reviews.

If I didn’t prefer my amplifiers’ natural overdrive tones, I’d use an EP Boost into a Zendrive, which I have done with great results.

Right now I'm getting alot of mileage out my Jetter Gold Standard (V2, if that matters). It's a pretty simple control interface, so there's not alot to screw up, but it still covers a pretty broad gain & EQ range between the two halves. It's not quite as cutting and tight as a Rat, but it has me considering ditching the Rat altogether nonetheless.

Now, if when I bought it I had a larger budget, pedalboard, and reservoir of patience, I would have gotten a Barber Gain Changer SR and Direct Drive Compact v3 and I'd have been set for life.

Like @miotich I run a Tumnus deluxe into a Plexidrive deluxe for my OD. I especially like the boost part of the Plexi I can go from light medium to heavy gain at the push of a button. I also have a mid boost on my guitar and an SSL 5 in the bridge (SSL 1 N + M). So a very versatile setup. We play totally clean songs like Ain’t no Sunshine and Wicked Game to 7 Nation Army and Tuff Enuff. Lots of territory to cover and this setup does it in spades

Your Tumnus deluxe IMO does BOTH of those ends of the spectrum. The EQ is so responsive- a little nudge makes a huge impact. I like running mine with bass and trebles flat and mids a slight push. Gain at 2 o clock - or dime it with the boost on. Blues heaven with SSL 1’s Such a great pedal.

stacked with a Plexidrive Deluxe - it’s blissful classic rock

Without any question: A Vertex Boost (original) and an OCD 1.7. The former is just an must-have for Fender blackface and silverface TONE. The latter can, on a budget, do everything from boost to total saturation. £100 of anyone's money well spent!

I've got a Sparkle Drive and I really don't like the TS808 sound personally. I a/b'd it extensively against the OCD 1.7 in LP mode and the OCD kills it for touch sensitivity and transparency. The above options are much more organic sounding.

If your budget can stretch to it a Hermida Zendrive is a better alternative to the Sparkle Drive if you must have that compressed "artificial" distortion TS type drive tone.

I don't recommend a KLON style pedal for Fender amps. IMHO they are already "bright" and "tight" enough. If you must have a KLON the aforementioned Wampler Tumnus is a great product.

    Anything but a klon/e!

I love tubescreamers, especially into blackface fenders. I'd run a TS into an OCD or similar MIAB pedal. Lots of possibilities...

I disagree. My Klone sounds incredible into my Fender 65 DRRI. I’ve played quite a few Klone style pedals I wouldn’t call it a bright pedal even with the treble pushed.

I've honestly never liked the klone tone. Its fine as an always on sparkle but driving a Fender circuit with one is to my ears not the most pleasing of tones.
    Different strokes..

Admittedly I run the gain flat out and use it as an overdrive rather than boost but agreed, different strokes.

Thanks. I'll try that setting. I've mostly pulled back the mids with the highs at 3:00, and 2:00 for the drive. Trying to save for the Plexy as I like that tone. For convenience, I was given one of those Tech21 Plexy fly rigs, which got me into the sound. I bet Wampler takes it to a new level.

I agree about the fender and Klon. I hear it shaving off the extreme high-end and punching the presence out a bit more. For me, it's a great contrast into a fender amp, and different feel to my AnalogMan TS9 modded.

For me it's a J Rockett Archer and a Wampler Pantheon for two great stages of gain.
