We have a member that just found out he has lymphoma and is having a lump removed from under his arm on Monday, so we've put things on hold for now. Health is #1.
You are correct in your answer. As I felt the same way. I always knew the lyrics by heart to any song I had to sing. I never used lyric sheets. I did not like the idea of him using a music stand on stage. I once told him I thought it looked tacky. But he was adamant about using it. Most of the tunes he grew up with I felt he should have already known thw words. I think it acted as a security blanket for him.I'm not wanting to be critical of your lead singer, but I'm a lead singer and I make a point to know the song lyrics before I get on stage. Even for newer songs, I would've still showed up on time and sang what lyrics I could remember, repeating a few verses if necessary. Most of the time the audience doesn't know the difference. But I don't know your situation, new band, etc. So there could be extenuating circumstances.
We had a pet dog who ended up getting twisted up in the curtain cord and strangled herself one Saturday even I was at practice my wife and kids were at the movies. My kids grew up without me in their lives pretty much. Due to rehearsals and gigs. I was away a lot of the time and when I was home I practiced.Well, my band had a hard time finding the stage at our last gig... View attachment 609558

I could have written the same post about mineBetween jobs and this and that and family and all, it's just hard to get much done. Bugs me that things get so slowed down but it's not like any of us are obstructing, it's just....life ****.
Old topic, but still a topic....We had a pet dog who ended up getting twisted up in the curtain cord and strangled herself one Saturday even I was at practice my wife and kids were at the movies. If one does not mind seeing their family grow old without them in their lives. Go for it. That’s your reward.
I understand. My son grew up playing guitar. Probably like yours but … He never majored in music. He is a teacher in Arizona Teaching high school math and Philosophy. Occasionally he plays guitar in front of his students. He has some videos on you tube doing so. But he is more into finger picking on his Taylor. IOld topic, but still a topic....
My only son is 20, he mom divorced me when he was 2, the young man is in the jazz studies program at a major university and gigs a hell of a lot more than I do. I live in a house with a bunch of music gear and a geriatric cat. The boy is about 200 miles away most of the time. Never did music take away from regular life, it was always the other way around.

....and ya know, there is a place for that. Some want to play out a lot and jam a little, some want to play out a little and jam a lot. Just a matter of actually telling the other band members.I wasted 10 years in a band wondering why we weren't playing out more than we did when the lead singer/founder finally confessed he really didn't like playing out that much. He said he had more fun just jamming with us in his garage than playing in front of people.
I wish I had those 10 years back....

I brag on my current band, we don't march lockstep but we seem to see things similarly and want the same things. Hopefully, we can play more when spring rolls around, and have fun through summer, and release more songs.Yeah. I will never "jam" with him again. Being forthcoming was never his forte I have learned.

We have used the time to write and record and start releasing original songs. Will continue that for a while.Yeah our current band has been on hiatus since Oct. Our bass player's wife has had some medical issues they have been trying to sort out so we decided to take a break through the holidays. It's pretty tough to get everyone on the same page from mid-November through January anyway. I thought we would be practicing again already. And maybe they are without me haha.
Yep, I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I fear that my band is coming to an end. One member and contributing song writer has been absent for 6 months, if the song wasn’t his, he barely contributed. Another member complains about his involvement, but takes months to contribute to the song as well.
I really didn’t want to go solo again, but it’s looking like reality.
There is one song left to finish for our 4th CD. It’s completely tracked and I’m waiting for the song writer to finish his mix. He’s so out of practice mixing, because of his lack of involvement, that it has sounded terrible. I’ve suggested changes and he is remixing. It took his denials of how terrible it sounded and him leaving it for a month then relistening, to admit how bad it was. I’ve got a mix done and waiting if he can’t get it together.
My current plan it to finish this CD, then confront the other band members on whether they really want to continue and contribute, or are they bored with the band and want to move on. It’s really sad, because I feel like the music is really good. It’s harder when they guys have been like brothers for years. If it’s over, it will still be done with grace, as I really like these guys personally.
I was/am a firm believer that you should have an outside ear mix your songs. They hear things with no attachment to a particular instrument just for the betterment of the song.
With regards to moving on, maybe can shift gears towards things that band members can do while separate like record from home or promote stuff.
