Recently sold my 65 Strat on Reverb and the buyer had me ship to a trucking company in NJ. Said it would ultimately be shipped to Poland but he would take care of it and thanks for the "donation". Thoughts?

How were you paid? seems very fishy and scam-like.....you DID get the shipping tracked and have proof of communication with him asking you use that address, right?

Do what now? That don't sound right.

But it could be a language barrier thing. Maybe?

As long as I got my money, I wouldn't care. Seems odd though

Sounds like a scam to me. i would make sure that he doesn’t stop payment on the check. I would only accept a cashiers check or money order if the person is in another country. I mean how are you going to find the guy if he dupes you? Better still find a buyer from the US. I’m sure there are plenty of people right here at home that would want to buy it. Have him send the money western union or such.

Perhaps he was just expressing his opinion that he felt it was very cheap ??

Was the shipping address in NJ a verified address linked to his Reverb and PayPal accounts? Does your buyer have any feedback on his Reverb account?

If the answer to either question is "no", then --if you still can-- you should stop (or at least hold) the shipment immediately... and then contact Reverb.

This is your Strat listing (right?):

Unfortunately, your A) being new to Reverb, B) having no feedback, C) selling a very expensive item, and D) being willing to ship overseas to an unverified address, ALL are green flags that signal "go" to a scammy criminal willing to take advantage of you.

I really hope you can stop the shipment and contact Reverb before it's too late!

    I also hope that I'm wrong! :)

    This sounds totally bogus.

FYI: Deposited money can be easily "clawed back" from a bank.

Even worse, if paid by bogus cashier's check or money order, your bank will post the deposit, then 2-3 weeks later when it is rejected by the clearing house, your money goes away.

OP: The oldest scam in the book is "Thank you, I know the guitar is only $3500, but I will send you $5,000. Please take your share, what is needed for shipping, and wire me the remaining balance"

    Hook, line, and sinker.
You ship out your item *AND* are on the hook with your bank for the $5000.

A common lead-in on this is "My son is leaving for Iraq and I need for you to ship _____ to him at his destination."

I really, really hope you didn't get taken, but this deal smells.
Why would a US trucking company be involved in something being shipped to Europe?
If you didn't ship it to a FedEx or DHL location....

Look up the address on Google Streetview... I'll bet $5 it's just a PO box.

I accepted a cashiers check from a bank and waited until the bank told me that they got the money before I shipped a Kramer Elliott Easton to a guy in NYC about ten years ago. It took about three weeks before it was safe to ship it and I told the guy up front that he was in for a long wait. There was never an hurry up on the guys part. It turned out ok, but could have not turned out good. And the check wasn’t very big to begin with. I’ve also taken personal checks, and those seemed to have cleared faster. But I’ve never fallen for the old I will have my shipper come to your house and pick up the guitar and they will ship it to me, where they offer to pay you more money than you were asking for, to end an auction early. There are so many scams anymore. Even PayPal doesn’t seem to be very safe for a seller these days. I think it was @vid1900 that said in another thread that he got burned. Buyer can come back later and demand a refund by say the item was not as described. Too many scammers out there.

I had a whole post on how not to get ripped off, but I can't find it now (I'm driving).

Usually the scam works because your bank is required to make funds available within 3 days.

But: Funds Available ≠ Check Cleared.

So the seller deposits the check, the bank tells them the funds are available in a day or so.

The seller thinks that means the check has cleared, so he ships the item.

3-4 weeks latter, the bank returns the check to you by mail, with the dreaded FIAI stamp on it (Fictitious Item, Altered Item), and charges you back the full amount of the check + $40 Returned Item Fee

Seems like a great deal, you ship locally and someone else takes care of the over seas hassle. I can't but congratulate you!

Lemme know if you want me top pop on the ferry to Poland to make sure "your" guitar arrives in one piece, I can be there in less than 24 hours. All I ask for the trouble is that you e-mail me some monopoly money.
