Four hours later the chrysalis shape is fully formed, from the lumpy gelatin blob to the hardening case the butterfly is forming in.
You can see the shape and pattern of the wings already, but they are tiny and will expand when it cracks out in maybe a week.
Also the yellow spots on the chrysalis will turn to gold.

LOL... I was wondering if it is a fence lizard. Not a lizard on a fence. I think fence lizards scales are not that rough.
LOL!... I have no idea.
My lack of knowledge of reptiles is surpassed only by my lack of knowledge of smelting precious metals.

this poor guy hurt his leg somehow. really proud type, too - wouldn't accept any food or water and would fight when we were trying to move him.

I would just scoop him into a box and put him somewhere safe to hopefully heal up. With some water and nuts or birdseed.
Looks like a youngster and may or may not survive but has a better chance if protected for a few days.
