been scouring GC used to find a cheap old Champ or Princeton to compare with my handbuilt SF champ copy and PRRI 65 and 68s. Ive Missed some mispriced/mislabeled ones recently..... And was getting pretty irritated. Up popped a kinda higher priced one but i was getting impatient. $560 shipped/tax

Called the store they said it had a Patriot 820 speaker..... no stock, and what he thought was GT tubes ugh!! I almost cancelled but figured what the heck. Got it in and looks mint, like near new. A few scuffs on the faceplate by the switch but that is all. I checked the transformer and its a 1969! Crazy for being so clean. Tubes are USA fenders so not modern GTs but what are they? Could they be original? 3 prong cord installed already so that's good. Plays and sounds great for the few hours i have had with her! I do not believe there were Fender branded tubes in 69, but I am no expert.
    Real nice amp you scored!

Good score. A few minor things not quite the way you prefer, is pretty much par for the course, due to the years, passage from owner, to owner.

It has two of the same rear covers, the wrong washers under the screws, and even one missing. So what. Still a good, hopefully well taken care of amp.

I have a 1968 VC, and an abused 1974 Bronco that has several mods done to it by who knows. Both really great amps. The ‘74 was gone through a few years back, the ‘68 is with the same electronics tech, getting a once over, that it has most likely been needing for a while. Time spent with a good tech, gets the amp back to specs. Good electronics health and a good speaker, that’s all anyone needs.

    Great score!

So funny... the Guitar Center employee saw "GT" in the tube part number and assumed they were Groove Tubes

It's possible/likely that the Fender tubes are original. The amp has obviously not seen a lot of playing time in that condition, and the recent speaker replacement shows someone who felt they were doing the right thing.
I believe the modern Fender tubed are marked JJ.
The rectifier being US is a good sign as to the originality as well.

Speaker was probably replaced when the 3-wire was installed... but I'd pop it open and make sure it was done properly, including disconnecting (removing) the cap.

Those are really great little amps, that still has good Fender tones with only an 8” speaker. These sure have gone up in price recently. I bought a mint 1977 VC and a mint 1968 black-line drip-edge VC about 5-6 years ago for just over $300 each.

You’ve got a very nice one that will probably only appreciate in value.

    Congratulations!

Nice amp and nice price. Enjoy it, they are great amps for around the house. Tremolo for me is a must have anymore.

I don't think that is a 69, unless the emblem has been changed. That 'no tail' emblem was only used 73 and later.

    At any rate, nice amp!!

Yes, probably a ‘73 or later. Also missing the drip edge for a ‘69. Still, a very nice amp.

I believe that the only real difference between a ‘69 to a ‘73 or later is the cab construction.

A photo of my ‘68 drip-edge VC below.

I have a 1969 champ-amp that I was actually looking at selling. It's got the original 2 of the original tubes (one was replaced with a new old stock rca). Just missing the back top plate. Nice line up. I've got a 69 twin drip edge :)

Another way to denote whether the amp is an early silverface is the -amp. Like a Vibro Champ-Amp or a Champ-Amp.

    Very Nice !

    Yours is from 1980.
The tubes are the originals by GE and Sylvania.
Date code 13th week of 1980.
One of the last silverfaces before they switched back to the 1980 blackface.

    He's my 1980 Champ:

    IMG_20201016_152844_329_1.jpg

These had a 3 prong cord from the factory.
The cord was probably replaced because the red plug ends were troublesome and would pull away from the jacket.

Note the fairly sharp edge at the top front of the cabinet.
This was a characteristic of late '70s/early '80s cabinetry.
