In recognition of the late, great Eddie Van Halen, we turn our attention to the Van Halen version of the Kinks classic, You Really Got Me.

Because the guitar starts after the count-in, but before the rest of the band, I've supplied the same backing track with and without guitar. If you like, you can run them in parallel in your DAW, then simply mute the version with guitar once you're happy with your own take.

Rather than tune this to the Ab VH used, I've pitched the track at G, like the Kinks original. If anyone prefers, I can retune it to A, so you can play it exactly like EVH, but without the half-step detune to your guitar.

Didn't want to be first in, so fair warning: I'll probably go for this one later today. :D

It's not obligatory to play it like EVH, although the backing is a bit beefy to play it like Dave Davis.

I'm getting a bit old for tempos like this. My first and only take.

BTM stands for "Brown Tone Metal," which is a GarageBand default I used to record it.

@Relaxing at Cam – Great that you joined in. It's a brave man who strays from the basic chord structure, because it's really what holds the song together. Even when EVH slips in the occasional embellishment between the vocal lines, it's very much based on the underlying chord at that point.

Sounds good Simon! You captured the spirit or "vibe" as the kids say.
Can you transpose the track to A, I'd like to give it a go !

Alas, I have no grandchildren. Probably best that you post your own track and save it for your grandkids! :D

You shall have it within the hour. :)

Here's my attempt. This is less of an improv and more of a cover but without actually learning the song. It's as if a friend said, "Hey Mouse, do you want to jump on stage and play You Really Got Me? You have 10 minutes!" :D

This is actually modulated back to A so the singer's voice is a little high lol.
