I need to learn a new scale pattern. I use the minor pentatonic, a blues scale and an alternative rock scale. I know technically those aren't the names but I use them, they were taught to me by very experienced player (they are real scales). What is a MUST KNOW universal scale that can be used in just about any genre? Thanks all.....

The major scale. It'll give you the seven basic diatonic modes.

For example, the C major scale gives you the D Dorian mode, the E Phrygian mode, the F Lydian mode, the G Mixolydian mode the A Aeolian mode and the B Locrian mode.

Put them all together and you get this:

    Descending chords:
    Cmaj7 - Bm7b5 - Am7 - G7

    Ascending chords:
    Cmaj7 - Dm7 - Em7 - Fmaj7 - G7

Thanks fezz parka, seriously. Do you know of a site or a link where I can get that tablature (if it's no problem). Sounds great with endless possibilities

    It's the C major scale.

    CDEFGAB

    Red indicates the root C.

To play the other modes start on the root of the modes

    Example D Dorian is DEFGABC.
    E Phrygian is EFGABCD etc.

Here are the seven patterns of the C major scale in a three note per string format.
They are all the same scale but they start on different notes.
The black dots are all C.

@fezz parka: that would make a really great exercise.

Can you please confirm you are playing the chord in the background and then doing the arpeggios of the respective chord in different positions or starting the full major scale from different notes?

    Thanks a lot to clarify.

I'm playing the complete mode ascending over each chord.

    So:
    I - C Ionian over Cmaj7
    ii - D Dorian over Dm7
    iii - E Phrygian over Em7
    IV - F Lydian over Fmaj7
    V7 - G Mixolydian over G7
    vi - A Aeolian over Am7
    vii° - B Locrian over Bm7b5

You can play the modes descending too. And yes it's a great exercise.
