I hate that I saw Clapton holding this guitar while digging through youtube videos, because it made me look at my Black 50s CV Squier Strat with a little less love.

My life has essentially been nothing but work this year, so I decided to start up a mini project and "build" my first Fender. The Vintera Modified was close, but I didn't really want to spend over $1000. I decided to pull the trigger on a Surf Pearl Player Series Strat and swap the pick guard for a single ply 50s look. They are on sale at Musicians Friend for $599 right now (which feels like a steal).

Overall, the guitar feels great. The frets aren't sharp, but there is some sprout that I'll take care of when I gently roll the fretboard. If I have to, I'll refinish the neck. I'm hoping it won't need it after though. I'm really excited to spend more time with it.

So far, the plan is to:
    - Swap pickups with my Squier Strat (Fishman Fluences)
    - Swap pickguard for white 1 ply & knobs (should I buy a Fender one and drill, or go Creamtone?)
    - Highwood Saddles (maybe)
    - I got some split shaft American Performer drop in tuners to keep the 50s look (only spent $25)

    Help would be appreciated here:
Should I worry about what seems to be a small gap between the neck and heel? It's very resonant and it's snugged nicely. I even tuned it and set it. It seems like it's only in the middle. I love the guitar and am hoping it's not a return thing. (thanks!)

If it's a keeper, I usually clean up the pocket and retorque. It certainly looks like a keeper!

Yes exactly. Make sure the neck pocket is clean of all excess paint.
