Antigua was not one of the more popular colors. It appeared briefly on the Coronado-II, supposedly the result of the paint being overheated when the binding was applied (though AFAIK, paint is sprayed after binding?).
It reappeared in '77-'79, and has appeared on a few FSR models including a Clapton FSR.
Some of the FSR releases got the pickguard "wrong" in that they were completely painted, the originals were painted only on the surface, the B/W/B edge was revealed.
Models with the tremolo had an unpainted standard B/W/B back cover.

Good information, thank you. The vintage music shop where I buy a lot of my guitars and amps had an Antigua Strat a few months ago. I recall that the shop was asking decent money for it (as compared to my ‘79 Strat) and that the Antigua sold really quickly.

Congrats! Hope you play it in good health for many years.

Some people rag on seventies Strats, but the ones I've played were just fine. And the one I still have (bought new in 1976) is an excellent guitar. No problems, whatsoever. Yes, there's a little bit of a gap at the side edge of the neck pocket, but the neck to body is solid as a rock - not a problem in 1976 and not a problem still. (Jimi didn't seem to have any problem with seventies Strats either.)

The blonde hardtail in the center is my 1976. The other two are Fender American Standards, around 2012-ish vintage. (Vintage meaning "year".)

It's funny, because it was not a popular color and they tended to hang around in music stores in the late 70s.
Mine was a '78, but I bought it new in '79. Hanging on the wall all the way in the back behind the rest of the Fender and Gibsons.

I can definitely see the color being love/hate. I do know that them being less common lets them fetch a premium now.

Yep... it's crazy. I love Antigua, though I've seen aged samples in some pretty ugly browns... but on the flip side, I can't stand Gibson's "Silverburst"

Some guys only collect the Antiquas because no one will ever steal them.

When I first saw a guitar in Antiqua, I hated it. That feeling has softened over the years. Now I like it. I remember seeing a vintage Jazz bass in GC a few years back, and I almost bought it, it looked so cool. It was a 4 string (of course), and these days, I pretty much only play 5 string basses, so I passed. I'd totally rock an Antiqua guitar though.

Jimi didn't seem to have any problem with seventies Strats either.

Considering his death in September of 1970, I doubt he had any issues with them.
    Nice collection, man. Top shelf!

Just beat me to it, man. He didn't seem to have a problem with CBS strats from the late '60s, but I doubt he played very many '70s strats before he left for places unknown...

I played an ugly mocha brown '70s strat for 25 years - it was my only electric for almost all of that time. Loved it. Love my current MIM hardtail at least as much, but that '70s strat was the only guitar I played out with during the years I was playing out a lot. Since I got back into playing about four years ago, I'm a home player so my gear doesn't get the abuse it used to...

Nice grab! Someday I'd love to find a '79 because that's my birth year. And a hardtail would be a bonus because I never use the wobbly stick.
