The most versatile Strat ever made.

    And that one is gorgeous!

Congrats! I had one in the same color, I do miss it, NEVER should have sold it.

Really nice HT collection! You've got all your strat PUP combinations covered, and each guitar looks fantastic!

I was really interested in the Big Apple Strats back in the late 90s but never jumped on one, although it did inspire me to get the Seymour Duncan pickup set (Pearly Gates bridge and '59 Model neck). I initially got them to stick in my 1981 Carvin DC200 - the original pickups got damaged after a girlfriend poured her perfume on them just for fun during a show (it was funny at the time).

Anyway, they didn't fit my sound I was after right then so got shuffled around for a while, eventually getting put in a HSH "Super Strat" type project:

I ended up putting so many bells and whistles on that one I couldn't remember what was what (I had something like 15+ settings on it). It was actually a pretty decent guitar (a 2004 Squier SE Special that was obviously doctored up quite a bit) but the neck was too thin for my liking, so once again those pickups became orphans.

I at least finally found a place for the Pearly Gates bridge pickup and it is currently in my 2020 Fender Duo Sonic HS:

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the '59 Model neck pickup, but, to be honest I never really like it all that much in the first place. On the other hand, that Pearly Gates pickup is awesome; Dynamic, bright, articulate and harmonically rich - sounding almost more like a hot single coil than a humbucker type pickup. It has a sweet singing tone that doesn't get blurry or muffled when cranking the gain and I'm really glad I finally found a special place for it...

    That's really cool.

I can't remember, are the pickups "Pearly Gates"?

The neck pickup is a normal Seymour Duncan '59 Model, but I believe the bridge pickup was a "Pearly Gates Plus"... whatever that means...

Yes a Pearly Gates "Plus" (a little hotter. more output than the regular Pearly Gates)in the bridge and a 59 in the neck. With amazing switching wired in.

Tough to beat. A studio's musicians dream.

I originally tried to wire up that HSH Super Strat I mentioned earlier using the Fender Big Apple Strat wiring schematic but the Pearly Gates Plus seems to be different than the regular Pearly Gates in that respect too, so it's difficult to say what was all changed without reverse engineering them I suppose...

Check out that link I posted above, it's got the exact wiring diagram, all the way to what capacitor they used. Whoever thought that up was really on spot. What amazes me most about those Big Apple's is that that fourth switch position, with the one coil on the neck pickup just perfectly nails that irreplaceable, Strat neck tone. Better than any other, split 59 I've played in other guitars.

I am going to build that pickguard exactly to the specs in the link I posted above, super-switch and all.

They use a 500k pot for the volume pot and 250k for the tones. That may be the secret to the success with those components working so well with each other?

But you can't get that Pearly Gates Plus unless you find an individual selling one on Reverb/Ebay. It was never sold individually to the public.

I'm going to substitute a JB ('cause I have one on the shelf), and a regular Pearly Gates and keep whichever one I think works the best. :)

That was the wiring diagram I went by too, but when using the "regular" Pearly Gates and '59 Model pickups together, they were out of phase and I had to switch the hot and common wires to avoid this - but I suppose it is possible that my Pearly Gates pickup was accidentally wired differently during production too (I've heard of this happening).

Anyway, I never read anything about the Big Apple Strat having an out of phase position, so I'm assuming that either the wiring is somehow different on the Pearly Gates Plus pickup or that mine is the oddball here - although, if it is, I can definitely live with mine as is... ;)
