You’re seeing double because I found a siblings to my original 1981 Ibanez Artist AS100. The original is on the left. It was made in July of 1981. I bought it in October of that year. The one on the right is the new to me guitar and it was made in February of 1981. I bought it yesterday. My original is well kept but I’ve played the heck out of it and it has some age related chips and scuffs. The one on the right has 3 minor scuffs that I could see.

I wasn’t looking for another AS100. I was actually looking for a nice pointy RG, JS or JEM but low and behold, what should appear under Ibanez but this beauty. It’s all original except for the tuners and the speed knobs. It has the original AlNiCo 3 Super 58’s too. My original AS100 has a set of SD Phat Cat’s the I installed and really like. Now I have the best of both worlds. Super fast necks too.

Oh, the new one appears to have an ebony board. It’s super dark and looks black, it has zero wear (unlike my rosewood boards) and there is no discernible figuring. I’ve never seen rosewood look like that. I’ve got 3 other early 80’s Ibanez artists with rosewood boards to compare it with and it stands alone in the level of darkness and lack of wear.

...and to think, I was actually looking for something more of a late 80’s shredder like the ones you’ve been showcasing. I’m a sucker for early 80’s Ibanez guitars.

Very nice, in my humble opinion early 80s ibanez semi hollows are the holy grail.

I have to agree. These guitars spoil me. They’re probably the reason I passed the few auditions I tried out for when I was playing in bands. Sustain for days. The guy I bought this one from had a mid-70’s silverface Champ and a reverb pedal. The volume wasn’t super loud but just enough to get some dirt if you dug in. It was amazing and now I want a mid-70’s Silverface Champ

@nigelr Weren’t you looking at an early 80’s LR10 a while, back? They are similar in aesthetics to the AS but the neck is really stable with the maple and mahogany laminate. I’ve never even seen one of those in my area but it would be a treasure to own.

    Very cool.
A friend of mine has an AS80 that I upgraded the electronics on to Duncan pickups (59 and ANP2) and CTS pots back in the 90s.

I was but the smaller body didn't appeal to me because I have two of the Chinese AS range already and prefer the larger body even though I'm quite small myself.

What a find! I'm sure you've looked real close at fretboard's grain on the new one. Congrats!

    Very nice.

I have an 82 AM-205 and love it. I've never felt the need to change out the pickups either, they are quite good.

Very nice! Miss my Artists....Every time I see a thread about early Ibanez I get a bit bummed. I had two solid body Artists A 78 and I believe a 79. One had typical dual humbucker layout with coil split options. The other one had a factory built in pre amp. Sold the pair for $1200. I could probably get that much for each now. They were in good condition.
