Quite unexpected but the price was too good to pass on. It seems to be a 1989 Stratocaster Plus Deluxe.

So in tge car on my way to a hotel I make a short detour to go look at it and it's about as much hillbilly country as you can find around here. The GPS takes me to a farm but indicates it's the wrong road. While I'm backing out I see people in the windows looking at me and flashing the window lights, so I think that maybe it's the right place after all. I step out of the car and ask the guy hanging out the window on the 3rd floor if it's the right adress. And he sais "no, what's your business there"? I say it's about a guitar.
-A guitar? (It's quite late, around 9.30 pm)
    -Yes, I answered an ad.
So he tells me it's his neighbour's hose and that I should drive around to the back.

Once there, a guy steps out and lights a
cigarette, clearly upset, shaking and puffing hard. He tells me he tasked hus wife with the ads and she wrote the wrong price, he had imagined another $300. I tell him that I won't force him to sell it and he replies that I'm there and that he's not backing out now. Nice I thought.

So while he's smoking he sais he also sells an amp, I saw the ad so I know it's a Marshall Valvestate and that he asks $500. I tell him I already have an amp and he goes:
    -What do you have?
    -A Yamaha.
-Ha! A Yamaha? What kind of f***ing sh*t is that? Mine's a Marshall you know, almost a tube amp, heavy as hell. Do you know what a tube amp is?
-Yeah, I'm actually building a small one.

    That ended the amp discussion.
    So he goes on.

-I don't play anymore, I'm too old. I'm 55, how would that look? Playing guitar at 55?
    -Yeah...

Wr go inside and I look at the guitar and we close the deal. He points at the headstock.
-Look. It's made in USA, none of that Japanese crap!

    I didn't bring up Mexico.

So he again tries to sell the Marshall and I told him I didn't need it, that I just sold a 100W Peavy tube head. Peavy seemed to impress him and I was no longer a weird Yamaha user. He, and his wife then tells me it's a good thing I'm not local because all locals always try to haggle. I go:
    -But I am local.
    -You don't sound like it.
-No, I lived in exile for too long.

That brought on a laugh so I proceed to ask for the best way to get back on the main road.

-No idea, we never leave this place. Can't you hear how I speak? (thick hillbilly accent)

We had another laugh and I left.

Sorry about the long story. Here's the guitar, came with a good stand and a really nice SKB hardcase. The color seems to be Blueburst Pearl. There's some pitting on the first three frets, the rest look untouched.

I think it is just called a Plus. The Plus Deluxe came a bit latter.

This is my 1990. Same colour - blue pearl burst.

I thought that the deluxe came in 1989? And that it came with different lace sensors other than just gold. This one seems to have at least one blue. It's hard to make out what the others are since the text has worn off.

If it's an 1989 Plus Deluxe it should have a blue lace sensor in the bridge and silvers in the middle and neck. If you look under the pickguard there should be colored labels on the back of the pickups. Lovely guitar, btw. The early Plus Deluxes are my favorites.

I have a deluxe I bought last month for $200. I think it's an 89 also. It's a sunburst with a E4 serial. It has the blue silver silver lace sensors in it.
I also have just a plus I bought last month that is the blue burst color.

Congrats on the Strat Plus! They are amazing guitars. Personally, that color has always been my favorite Strat color.

Nice story. I had a maple-board Blue Pearl Plus for a long time, it was the guitar that turned me on to Strats after a youth of pointy shredder guitars. Damn those detachable tuner knobs were annoying.

    Score!

I'm trying to understand why he feels it's wrong for a 55 year old to play guitar.
Has he never seen Keith Richards?

    Sweet Plus, congrats!

yeah they sell new locking tuner buttons, but the threads don't match. They have some old tuners on ebay sometimes that are the same. Or you can just get a complete new set, or even put a set of Sperzels on there. If you get the right kind it would be period correct also.
