I was searching high and low for an affordable Springy Sound with no luck, until I came across this guitar listed on FBM in Ohio. I rolled the dice and asked if the owner would be willing to ship it. He said yes, threw in free shipping, a basically new Gator tweed case ($160) and an extra set of new Kluson Deluxe locking vintage tuners ($75) all for $950. It was a gamble, but it paid off.
The guitar is a 1982 Tokai Springy Sound ST-60 in a beautifully aged Olympic White. It's very light at 7lbs 5.8oz and the neck is fantastic with some light flame on the maple. It's kind of crazy how thin the Rosewood veneer is. It also has the "U" stamped pickups that sound great to my ears.
According to the previous owner, it's all original except for a Fender 5-way switch that got swapped out when the original failed. However, I suspect it had a refret at some point because they seem a little too large and have a bit of fret sprout going on. I shouldn't have much trouble sorting that out in an afternoon though. Otherwise it's fairly dinged up, but the neck is straight and playing it really puts a smile on face. Once I get the frets sorted out this is going to be a keeper for sure.
