I was just browsing eBay and Reverb looking for a late model MIM Standard Strat and there’s hardly any on there. When I did see one, they want almost new Player money for it. Maybe it’s the COVID thing. I dunno.. I just keep saving for another new Player I suppose.
The Squiers are costing about as much as I was hoping to pay for a used MIM.

People generally price used MIM's at whatever their monthly rent is lol.

What I'm hearing and finding is buyers who believed that the COVID and all of the unemployment would create significantly lower prices as sellers became more desperate to sell are finding that in reality that hasn't happened yet.

Even the dealers aren't running their more typical 10% or more off sales lately and I haven't gotten a 20% off inducement from my local GC in many months. Instead dealers are leading with their 0% interest extended payment plans realizing many want to preserve cash and other credit lines right now and are being more selective about discounts in many cases limiting them solely to close outs and overstocks.

As a private seller I have no way to compete with those financing programs unless I'm willing to price far below current FMV to attract those who do have the cash to spend. My guess is many others are in the same boat plus demand always slacks off during the summer months so even reducing your price won't assure you of a buyer. Given the resurgence in COVID cases if stimulus programs are not extended this may change in a month or two. JMHO

What surprises me most is that there’s just not very many people selling.. or so it seems. Mostly just all new stuff.

The dingbats on my local CL usually ask about a grand for MIM's. OK, just a slight (I really mean slight) exaggeration.

I'd say you're about right on that. On ebay, I see a massive reduction in the number of guitars for sale. My guess is that there are a lot of would-be sellers who simply have bigger issues to deal with right now, but a whole lot more would-be buyers who need to hang onto whatever cash they have in case they can't pay the bills.

There is also the possibility that people don't wan't to have items delivered to their home in case they are contaminated. Almost everything that comes into our house is either: washed in very hot water; wiped with disinfectant cloths, or left for 72 hours before we touch it again. I wouldn't think about buying a used guitar until the COVID crisis is over.

Sadly, I think there will be a lot of 'fire sales' over the coming months. Many of those won't always be from the original owners, but from their surviving relatives. I'm desperately sorry to see how the infection rate is escalating in the US, not least because I have family across North America too. Stay safe, my friends. :thumb::thumb::thumb:

I think the buying and selling market is extremely stunted right now.
As far as used, nice jags I was looking for, had to buy new. There were none out there, hardly.

This is what I’m noticing also. For some reason I had it in my head that I could go out and buy a used MIM standard for around $300-$400 bucks. I don’t hardly even see any for sale. Oh well.. I wait awhile.

It's been discussed how sales were way up early on in the pandemic when everyone was stuck at home. Seems like they reached their apex right after the stimulus checks landed (Cuz to hell with paying rent or bills - I can buy gear!) and have slowed way down since then.

Personally, I am on a tear - I've invested 10 grand is just acoustics in the last month. It's not like I am suddenly wealthy, either - I sold a guitar and two amps to offset that figure.

My point is that the market is still moving, just more selectively.

Casino Guitars posted a video yesterday about the guitar shortage. My local mom and pop has sold a Martin CEO 9 (unique guitar so not huge demand) within 5 days of it arriving and sold a Beddell Braz Rosewood dread they have had for a year that cost $10k in May once they were allowed to reopen they also sold a $6K Martin D28 Authentic they’ve had for 7 months. Both GC’s near me and Sam Ash are at half or less of their normal inventory. Folks are buying guitars like they did toilet paper.

No better time than the present to take up a new hobby, I suppose. I bet a lot of people have used this time to try to learn the instrument.

Yep. Same with bikes. My local bike shops are down to only a few bikes left with 3-4 weeks turnaround on orders. Our trails are flooded with new riders. My Sam Ash told me they have sold more guitars, especially acoustic, since March than any other spring in their last 10 years.

I bought one in mint condition for just that in about Feb. before this thing really hit hard. i'm surprised to hear you can't get one for $400.... but prices on Reverb are crazy.

I'm sitting on a bunch of cash wanting to get some hard assets to hedge against the inevitable inflation from the fed printing all that funny money, but I'm not looking to lose money. If I wanted to do that I'd just leave it in a bank.

The few good deals I've found were from people on here. They weren't hardship sales or astounding prices..but fair prices on quality instruments. My only agenda is to enjoy them until covid eventually takes me out and that my heir can sell them and get the money out of them as they need it.

This is really one of the only places you can get fair prices, from trustworthy people. I’ve gotten some killer deals here. tDPRI is great for Tele stuff. Unfortunately there is no jaguar version that’s not a ghost town.

I was also looking on EBay and a few other places. There really isn’t much used stuff being sold anywhere. If it is, it’s usually at very inflated prices.

eBay sucks, when you’re the seller.

People probably feel like they need to raise their prices to compensate for all the money they lose on fees, and the fact that many buyers prefer free shipping nowadays. I try to sell local and take a profit cut, most of the time.

Also, less chance for return, because they physically hold and see the item before taking it home.

too many horror stories on this forum alone, to ever list a big item on the bay.

And when individuals stop listing, the selection goes to mostly dealers selling items...which it really seems like that’s the thing now.

They seem to have moved up a notch in price more into the $400 plus range.

I may have to look over there.. I have a local guy who does me right as well, but he's talking about closing up shop and retiring. Bought my first Tele from him couple weeks ago and I'm loving it. It's a nearly mint 2007 American Telecaster in Candy Cola.. I've got a variety of strats. Wouldn't mind checking out a few different Teles...

I was a newb over there, and they’re pretty cool. Got some great Tele bridge pickups (OV Tele bridge pickups) for very cheap. It’s a lot like here. No BS pricing, and overall helpful people.
