I think it's a tie, so I can't name one: McCartney, Bill Wyman, Entwhistle, and believe or not, a guy I personally thought was outstanding, and didn't get enough kudos: Leon Wilkeson of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Lots of great bassists. For me? Easy. Leland Sklar. Seemed like for a while that dude was everywhere. That in itself made me want to play bass. The guy is a phenominal musician, and has a mind blowing resume.

I once read where he said something to the effect that he got so much work because he spends little time worrying about things like racks of gear and piles of basses and such. His philosopy is learn the material, show up, travel light, have a good basic bass tone, and be cool. Really what else is there? I'm more of a guitarist, but even as a guitarist I follow this philosophy.

And besides being a great soloist, he was a masterful accompanist. Just check out his masterful playing on this track, so beautiful:

This is some of my favourite work of his.

I just noticed the thread and thought the same thing! Geddy Lee for sure! Back in the day, Rush toured with Primus as an opening act. Imagine the bass insanity going on that night!
