It really does look exactly like the knobs on my Les Paul Standard ’50s.

Yep, the knobs with the silver inserts are called "reflector" knobs, typically found on SG's, although some Les Pauls do have them. The plainer "top hat" ones, like on your Les Paul, are the more typical, along with " speed knobs".
This is a top hat knob, and a top hat reflector, and a speed knob.

I don’t know if this solves the mystery as to whether or not it’s the wrong knob or if it just lost the reflector, but the knob shape and clear coating really create an illusion. When you look straight on at it, the base looks curved (convex) and as if it has a little lip near the outer edge. The curve-effect and the lip-effect are caused by the clear coating. The curve is actually concave, and there’s no lip.
