No worries.. I'm mostly a casual user. Mostly on weekends or when I just need to get away from the stress of things. I can quit any time, no problem. :D

I do make an assumption about you . . . kind of . . . just going by the feedback you've given to me directly and elsewhere in here. You seem hostile, and for what reason I cannot tell. I'm only describing general social trends that have been widely discussed elsewhere already well before today. Plus, having worked with young people for some time, I've been told many times that they don't use or care about FB, and that it is seen as a platform for people my age (ca. 40 years old) and older. A miniscule sample size, I realize, but nevertheless.

I make no assumptions about Facebook and I have no problem with it. It's not for me, but that's all I have to say about it. I merely acknowledge that it has some sociological functions (a couple of which I outlined already), and it is only these functions that interest me. I'm pretty dispassionate about the whole thing.

Like, I've already said that different people use FB for different things. Whatever.

Maybe some clever philosopher somewhere has written an essay arguing that FB isn't really the function at all, but rather that we are the functions of FB. I'd read that.

So I'm done here. You can take your valorous defense of Facebook to someone else.

I am incredulous today. My god. How did I get here? What have I done? This is not my beautiful house. This is not my beautiful wife.

Why are you running away after your long post?
You certainly don't seem dispassionate about it, so why pretend?
You made a blanket statement about a sh!tty 'news' source and my experience of facebook, and then backed off when questioned.
Now you're calling me a defender of facebook, what's the inference?
Before more assumptions surface, I am from Canada.

Some of the posts here are entertaining. The others are serious.

    I'm running from boredom.

I don't back off from anything here. There's just no point in a back-n-forth with a 60 year old man from Florida (according to the internet).

Nobody has ever accused me of passion before. But I do love me some macroeconomics and anthropology.

The "op-ed as news" business model was perfected by Rupert Murdoch in the 1990s with the onset of the 24-hour "news" cycle. This, along with the subsequent world wide web, blew up the advert-based "information should be free" model of news distribution.

Anybody who enters into this marketplace of ideas knows -- or should know -- that the entire premise is to play/prey on their psychology as motivated consumers. It's a model well over a century old.

Enter FB. It's an amazing medium for preachers and choirs and their social networks. And on FB, there are preachers and choirs of every persuasion. But it's become especially prominent, in my experience, as a source of information and distribution among folks who, for example, believe that Google is "hiding" information (or at least the "correct" information) from them. Additionally, FB figures prominently in the CTR of Bing's search algorithm.

I don't know if you're defending FB or not. But you're policing this thread rather peculiarly and seem to have taken particular issue with my points about older demographics and misinformation. No specific connection was meant by those two terms on my part, but it just so happens that the median demographic for Fox News was (last I checked) 65 years old . . . which was also the oldest age allowed for by Nielsen ratings.

Now I'm actually done. If you still don't understand what I'm saying, that's on you. If you disagree with what I'm saying, just swallow it or otherwise take it up with someone else.

I'm not from Florida, don't know why that would be suggested.
Anyway, I have enjoyed our conversation more than you it seems, sometimes my good-natured sparring doesn't translate well and maybe I should consider more emojis.
Sorry if I came across as a d*ck.
    I've already offended America!;):thumb:

    Are you not entertained, monsieur?
Perhaps a tonewood thread would be more to your liking?

    Not for nothing but.....
    Were we cyber attacked today?
Here's the thing, this morning at the office:
Phones were down, because of a carrier failure. Ok. Sometimes shiz happens.
My cellphone (different carrier) was "cannot complete call at this time" for about two or three hours. Didn't give it too much thought. I kind of enjoyed the quiet.
Then the Facebook fiasco. I didn't know about that until I saw it here.
    Ok. Kind of amusing.
Now, I'm trying to access my sign in page for ms mail.
The same sign in page that's been in my cache for ever, is now trying to download something onto my phone.
    Odd for sure.
Oh, and I can't sign in for my webmail.
    Wtf is going on here?
