I was a newbie on these forums when I decided to rebuild my old Cort MIK Strat (black with white pickguard and pickups). Knew nothing about guitar mechanics, electronics, setup, etc. Been playing for well over 30 years but just casually and never really dug into the workings of the guitar.

Posted a lot of dumb questions on this site and you guys were kind enough to answer them and give me guidance. Appreciate that immensely.

Here is the list of the hardware upgrades done to the Rash Monkeycaster:

    - Wilkinson Hot Rails Low Gauss single coil sized humbuckers in all positions
    - Wilkinson WVS50IIK 2 point floating tremolo bridge
    - Bourns 500 K push/pull pots wired for series/parallel for each pickup
    - 333 uf orange drop capacitor
    - Spoke wheel truss rod nut
    - Fender locking tuners
    - Plastic single coil chrome pickup covers neck, middle
    - Nickel coated brass humbucker cover bridge

.. And services performed to put it all together:

    - full fret level, crown, and polish
    - plug holes of old pickguard and bridge with bamboo
    - align/measure/drill new holes for Wilkinson floating tremolo bridge
    - route larger hole for tremolo bridge
    - route body for bridge humbucker and deeper pots
    - drill new hole from main cavity to jack cavity to allow for thicker cloth wire.
    - enlarge tremolo cavity hole to allow for thicker cloth ground wire
    - tap new threads in spoke wheel nut to fit truss rod threads
    - dremel notch in pickguard for spoke wheel nut
    - dremel pickguard neck curve to match existing neck
    - paint edge of pickguard red
    - solder/wire new pots and pickups for series parallel, with master volume and two tones (bridge/neck and middle)
    - modify bridge pickup cover to fit single coil pickup (see pics)
    - strip headstock, retint to match neck, add custom waterslide logo, re-laquer
    - enlarge tuner holes and drill new ones for Fender tuners
    - shim neck pocket to allow for proper action
    - buff and polish body and scratched

I made many mistakes and errors in each of these steps, and thus learned a great deal. It's inspired me to build a guitar from scratch at some point, but for now I'd like to get back to playing and getting better.

Oh yea, also built a pedal board along the way.

Thanks again for everyone's help and advice.

This is my favorite shot, it looks like it's getting hit by cosmic rays.

The card stickers are removable - did it for my poker buddies but might remove them.

I don't know what's going on with the "Attached files" at the bottom of the posts. Anyone know how to remove them?

    NVM - fixed it

The red pickguard outline makes all the difference in the world.....without it ,it wouldnt stand out so much and the end result is a cool looking guitar....i like the inlays too...i think they are from that jokomo guy in japan right?...they can last years if you dont mess with them and they look very good.Congrats on your guitar mods.

Thanks. It may not be obvious in the pics, but the pickguard is chrome - it's hard to get pictures of it because of reflections. It looks white in alot of pics, which is why you might feel it wouldn't stand out without the red edge. That being said, I agree.;)

Wow! Nicely done, and a lot of work went into this! I wish I'd followed your path when I transitioned from 30 years of just playing to learn to work on, mod, and build (from parts, not scratch) guitars. I started with high-end parts, so all of my mistakes and changes of taste cost a lot. Starting with an older guitar makes so much more sense for learning. I can't wait to see what you build one day when you start something new!

Yes! And you probably could've used just one dowel, cut into short pieces, rather than a fresh dowel for each hole. But it did give you a great photo op!

I should probably explain why I even had to fit a single coil sized humbucker in a full size cover. The Wilkinson Hot Rail bridge pickup is too thick for a single coil sized pickup cover to fit over it - I tried everything. So it was either install without a cover or use my McGyver skills to make it fit in a full size humbucker cover.

Wow - that looked like a lot of fun. I’m planning on working on my old guitar as well, but my ambitions are currently limited to changing a volume pot.
