I ordered a new guitar from Guitar Center's website today.

I had been playing one at my local GC and was close to buying it when they shut down due to the virus. I went on their website today to ask about store closings and how they affected purchases, as I like to have guitars I order from them delivered to my local store. It's free, and if there is anything wrong I just walk away; they refund the money and take care of the return.

The salesperson answered my questions, then went straight into the "what would it take to get you to place your order now?" routine. She basically made me an offer I couldn't refuse: 15 percent off and free shipping, plus she put a $50 gift card on top and let me use it on this purchase. I ended up saving 400 bucks on a guitar I was more or less prepared to pay full price for a month ago. (This model just debuted at Winter NAMM and isn't being discounted anywhere yet.)

The moral of the story - besides the fact that I have a pending NGD and am super psyched - is that GC is still alive and kicking online, and its salespeople are authorized to make very good deals if you ask. Those federal refund checks are supposedly coming, and my birthday is next month. Why TF not?

Thanks for the update Duane. Good to know.

I’m wanting to buy another Telecaster since I sold my last one a few months ago. Maybe I’ll also take the plunge.

I have purchased many guitars and amps (new and used) in the same way, shipped to one of my two local GC stores. That’s the best way, especially when you open the box there for the initial inspection.

Glad to hear that GC is still operational online and I wish the in-store GC people the best. Sad times, I hope that we all make it through this okay and come back stronger.

Curious about GC online purchases, do they do a setup like Sweetwater or Wildwood or do they just ship how it was received from the factory?

One nice thing about my local GC is they have in house luthiers now and they set up every guitar before it gets hung on the wall.

I think calling any GC employee a "luthier" is a bit of a stretch.

Ha! It's a Guild M-25e, basically a dressed-up M-20 with a pickup. I have been GASsing for a smaller-sized acoustic ever since I sold my GS Mini and fell in love with this model the first time I picked one up. My good friend's grandfather, Alfred Dronge, founded Guild - so it has some special meaning in that regard as well.

I think that's probably correct in most cases, but there are exceptions. A former "tech" at my local GC is a certified luthier and does incredible work, including scratch builds. He only worked there for a very short period of time, though, because they don't pay anything.
