Just happened upon the Police doing Every Breath You Take. Singing along (badly) found myself coming out of the middle eight straight into Bobby Vet’s ‘ More Than I Can Say’. How did Sting get away with it?

It's a fine line between the cop and the criminal.

Considering Led Zeppelin won the super-obvious "Taurus/Stairway" lawsuit, I suggest you drink the Sting koolaid, and embrace him and his Police brethren for being such clever, filthy thieves!!!

To me, Clapton ripped off Stairway (and he admitted it) far more obviously than Zep ripped off Taurus.
The Taurus scale was not even copied directly... Clapton played much more of the riff and played it closer to Page's run.
Page added the notes on the high E, Taurus was just playing a basic descending root.

The reason Mrs. California lost was that the judge refused to allow the music to be played in the courtroom. He only allowed a third party transcript of each song to be admitted as evidence.

Either way, regardless of the legal decision, Led Zep members should have given some money to Randy's widow. They should have done that without even going to court. There's no question where Page got the riff from.

Page was the stairway, everything he touched turned to gold, I listen to that "Spirit" song and it's crap, not a big fan for Clapton's Let It Grow either.

There really isn't anything else like Led Zeppelin, they are unlike anything else at that time or really even now, and frankly if they did "steal" Spirits song, thank goodness they did, because what a forgettable song it was compared to Page's Stairway.

I was kinda sorta being sarcastic. But my point was if Led Zep won that case, then Bobby Vee ain't gotta chance in hell (dating the devil's daughter) of suing the Police over that.

That's an epic Police track! What did Stevie record that was similar?

I think that I would need one of those clever mashup videos in order to hear it.

Wrighty...are you hearing the same music or are you saying the words from one can fit in the other?

I see a similarity, but not enough to rise to the level of infringement. Ditto for "Let it Grow" versus "Stairway" mentioned above. I think the courts have to be careful--there's only a couple of dozen chords in common use. To rule that using a few of them in a row without taking into the context the totality of verse-chorus-bridge-outro would render our recording devices pratically useless from a commercial standpoint.
