This is posted on behalf of @Thrup'ny Bit , who's having a difficult time at the moment.

Welcome to PMW#11. As in previous months, the idea is for you to put down a rhythm track, compose a melody, play something different/solo in the middle, then return to the melody. All straightforward enough. Or is it?

The backing track and the chord sheet are below. It probably won't take you long to work out that the first 8-bar section is in D minor, but then the track 'modulates' to another key. To put it another way, the tonal centre shifts, meaning it's not in D minor any more, as the arpeggios suggest.

I'll leave it to you to decide what the second key is. When you've worked it out, please keep it to yourself until everyone has had a chance to think this through.

I look forward to hearing your takes.

No idea about the details, but my thoughts go out to Thrup'ny bit and family during their current difficulty.

That's about as fine a how-to as we could ask for, @dogletnoir. Squier Bullet, eh? Truly, it's a great guitar in your hands.

My thoughts are with Dave and his family... i'm headed out on a road trip to Yosemite to give talks at a wildlife rehabilitator's conference (orphaned raccoon care and an advanced ethics workshop on the costs to the life of the caregiver) so i'll be out of commission for working on this until early next week... but it looks nice and i have my ideas about the key change...

Uh-oh, didn't see Simon's post of Dave's take until I just finished my first take. This ought to be interesting. Thank you Dave and Simon (I took some liberties):

Very cool. Great sounds, great top lines and nice chords... almost all of the time. There are a few instances where your chord voicing sounds nice against the melody, but it makes the bassline sound somewhat dissonant. I reckon you could revisit that and make the chord part a better fit for the bass. It probably only needs one finger to move one fret and you're suddenly in the land of lovely!

BTW, am I right in thinking that's a 1972 Gibson ES-325 in your picture? Hardly anyone remembered that model until the Kings Of Leon got big.

@Thrup'ny Bit very helpfully marked the beginning and end of the section that repeats. I missed that first time round...

    Form:
Drum count off, 4 bar intro, then 8 bars A section and 8 bars B section; those 16 bars played 2x.
    EDIT: those 16 bars repeated.
What i meant to say was, 'those 16 bars played 2x more', sorry.

Morning all, just a quick visit. Thanks for all your kind words, they're much appreciated. Many thanks @simoncroft for keeping things going.

The main section repeats 3 times. :) Two for me, one in the middle for you.

    I can't hear you.jpg

Save the effects for jam sessions, I want to hear what you're playing.

Thank you for the feedback Simon. Jass has sent me back to the woodshed as well - I'll clean it up. And yes that is my ES 325; bought it new back in the day. Haven't played it a lot so it's mint. Used it with my BOSS ME-80 for the chords on this track. Used my LP Special for the solo/melody line. Thanks again.
